The senator cut his trip short and returned to the Lone Star state amid the controversy.<\/p>\n<p>He later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2021\/02\/18\/ted-cruz-deplanes-in-texas-police-escort-cancun-trip\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">called the trip a <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2021\/02\/18\/ted-cruz-deplanes-in-texas-police-escort-cancun-trip\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mistake<\/a> and said he wouldn&#8217;t have traveled to Cancun in hindsight.
