Local Visions: Reimagining the Fa\u00e7ade asks ten San Diego-area artists to rethink one of the city\u2019s most recognizable landmarks \u2013 SDMA\u2019s historic Spanish Colonial Revival fa\u00e7ade in Balboa Park. <\/p>\n
It\u2019s a smart way to celebrate 100 years: instead of looking backward, they\u2019re asking local artists to imagine what comes next.<\/p>\n

Ten Artists, Ten Visions<\/p>\n
The museum put out an open call that generated a huge response from the local arts community, and ten artists were selected to reimagine the fa\u00e7ade as a canvas for storytelling, identity, and the future of San Diego\u2019s cultural landscape. <\/p>\n
These aren\u2019t just conceptual sketches \u2013 each artist brings their own perspective on what the museum represents and could become. It\u2019s the kind of project that makes you see a building you\u2019ve walked past a hundred times in a completely different way.<\/p>\n
Three Centennial Artist Honorees<\/p>\n
Among the ten featured artists, three were named official Centennial Artist Honorees: <\/p>\n
Lori Mitchell<\/a>, a San Diego art educator, focuses on creativity, mentorship, and arts education<\/p>\n Tim Novara<\/a>, whose work has been featured at San Diego International Airport, is one of the most recognized local artists in the region<\/p>\n Wagner Humphreys<\/a>, a San Diego Zoo tour operator by day and artist by night, bridges everyday experience and artistic practice in ways that feel grounded and accessible<\/p>\n It\u2019s a diverse group that reflects different corners of San Diego\u2019s creative community.<\/p>\n Why This Matters<\/p>\n Local Visions isn\u2019t just about celebrating SDMA\u2019s past \u2013 it\u2019s about acknowledging the role local artists play in shaping how we experience shared civic spaces. <\/p>\n The fa\u00e7ade has been a cultural icon for a century, but this exhibition asks: what could it mean for the next century?
