{"id":145096,"date":"2026-01-22T19:37:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-22T19:37:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/145096\/"},"modified":"2026-01-22T19:37:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T19:37:07","slug":"border-patrol-cameras-coming-to-an-iconic-coastal-oc-town","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/145096\/","title":{"rendered":"Border Patrol Cameras Coming to an Iconic Coastal OC Town"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Customs and Border Patrol agents will soon be monitoring San Clemente\u2019s idyllic coastline in an effort to crack down on panga boats after city officials narrowly approved a camera installation on a ridge high above the town.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a split vote this week, city council members voted 3-1-1 to enter into a 20-year lease with the Department of Homeland Security that allows for camera installations at a reservoir overlooking the Spanish village by the sea despite scores of residents raising privacy concerns.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of comments about police state and privacy \u2013 our privacy is not being invaded. None of your privacy is being invaded. None of your liberties are being invaded. Credit: JULIE LEOPO, Voice of OC<\/p>\n<p>Loeffler said public safety outweighs privacy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI look at it \u2013 maybe from my background \u2013 as safety might better balance out privacy,\u201d Loeffler said. \u201cI can see both sides of this. Credit: JULIE LEOPO, Voice of OC<\/p>\n<p>Later in the meeting, Councilman Enmeier said hadn\u2019t heard any community support for the move.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took a compilation of emails that were sent to me. By the way, I didn\u2019t get a single email that was in support of this \u2013 that says a lot,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Resident Kathy Esfahani said the current deportation raids are based on politics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone of this is being done for safety. It\u2019s being done for politics. It\u2019s being done to please Trump\u2019s base,\u201d Esfahani said. \u201cHe\u2019s trying to run up the numbers of people being deported as quickly as possible to please his base.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Spencer Custodio is the civic editor.
