Big Third Quarter Helps Cal Improve To 4-0 On Season<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\tBERKELEY \u2013 The No. 4 California women’s water polo team broke open a close game by scoring five consecutive goals in the third quarter and defeated No. 9 Fresno State 15-11 on Saturday on the first day of the inaugural Brigitte Donner Daws Memorial Invitational at Spieker Aquatics Complex.<\/p>\n

The Golden Bears (4-0), who have beaten three top 10 opponents in their first four games of the season, led 9-6 at halftime before blanking the Bulldogs 5-0 in the third period to take control. Sophomore Rosalie Hassett<\/a> had a dominant performance with four goals, two steals and two assists to lead Cal’s efforts.<\/p>\n

Freshman Despoina Drakotou<\/a>, the reigning MPSF Newcomer of the Week, made a case to repeat with three goals and two assists while junior Feline Voordouw<\/a> also had three goals and a steal. Junior Nieve Courtney<\/a> added a goal and two assists and a steal.<\/p>\n

The teams took turns scoring to open the first quarter before Cal scored five in a row to make it 8-3 midway through the second. Fresno State stayed close before the Bears’ third-quarter run gave them a comfortable advantage.<\/p>\n

Freshman Marina Brown<\/a> scored her first career goal in the fourth quarter.<\/p>\n

Cal closes out the weekend with a matchup against No. 12 San Jose State.
