SACRAMENTO, Calif. \u2014 Sacramento International Airport (SMF) reached a new milestone in 2025, serving 14 million passengers and marking its busiest year ever.<\/p>\n
The total represents a 2% increase over 2024 and extends the airport\u2019s growth streak to 23 consecutive months of year-over-year passenger gains, from January 2024 through October 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Officials credit the growth to expanded airline service, increased seat capacity, and the addition of six new nonstop routes, including transcontinental flights and expanded international service to Mexico. The airport also said it retained 12% more travelers who previously used Bay Area airports, accounting for more than 400,000 passengers who once drove long distances for flights.<\/p>\n
\u201cPassenger demand at SMF continued to climb in 2025, reflecting both the region\u2019s growth and travelers\u2019 preference for Sacramento International Airport,\u201d said Cindy Nichol, Director of Airports for Sacramento County. \u201cThese results show that strategic investment, strong airline partnerships, and a clear vision for the future are paying off.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Throughout the year, the airport set multiple monthly passenger records, including record-breaking months in June and July.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The passenger gains came as the airport continued work on its $1.4 billion SMForward modernization program, which includes advanced construction on the pedestrian walkway, parking garage, and new concessions set to open in 2026.<\/p>\n
In 2025, the Department of Airports also added direct flights to Anchorage, Baltimore, Morelia, Orlando, Puerto Vallarta and Tucson.<\/p>\n
Looking ahead, SMF said it’ll continue pursuing expanded international service, including its first-ever nonstop route to Europe.<\/p>\n
