Some members of the Los Angeles City Council have expressed concerns that there could be an organized boycott of the 2028 Olympics, which could cost the city financially.<\/p>\n
The City Council\u2019s committee on the Olympics met Monday, and during the meeting, Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson said he was concerned the country is suffering reputational harm due to the violence in Minneapolis and elsewhere, LAist reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cWe have a national government who is setting the stage for an environment where we could have a serious boycott,\u201d Harris-Dawson said.<\/p>\n That notion has gained prominence as a potential boycott of the American matches of this year\u2019s World Cup was proposed by an anticorruption expert who formerly worked with FIFA and a former president of the soccer organization.<\/p>\n Mark Pieth, the anticorruption expert, criticized President Donald Trump<\/a> to Swiss newspaper Der Bund.<\/p>\n \u201cIf we consider everything we\u2019ve discussed, there\u2019s only one piece of advice for fans: Stay away from the USA!\u201d Pieth said.<\/p>\n Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter tweeted Pieth\u2019s words with his own analysis<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cI think Mark Pieth is right to question this World Cup,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n That momentum is worrying to Los Angeles officials, as the city is the ultimate financial guarantor for the Olympics, LAist explains<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cThe city of L.A.\u2019s financial exposure is essentially unlimited,\u201d the outlet wrote. \u201cThe city is on the hook for the first $270 million in losses, if they occur. The California Legislature has agreed to make statewide taxpayers pick up the next $270 million. After that, any additional financial burden will fall on Los Angeles taxpayers.\u201d<\/p>\n
