That, ladies and gentlemen, is exactly what our beloved city needs.

It feels like the people of Clovis and Fresno have been waiting for a development like The Avenue, located on Willow and Shepherd avenues, for years.

Already, the area has a few well-known establishments, like Otherside Café (a suburban mom staple), the new Willow Osteria (Annex Kitchen’s cousin) and, I can’t forget, Ampersand (the weirdest and most addicting ice cream you’ll ever eat).

In October, the family-owned Enzo’s Table officially made its debut with an in-house coffee addition, called Il Caffé, and continued selling high-end honey and kitchen products. As of December, they’ve begun serving wine.

I admit, I’m not a very adventurous eater or drinker. I like what I like, and I run with it. However, I am quite an avid café-goer born and raised here, so I’m here to give you the scoop on what’s what with Enzo’s Table.

I’ll tell you right now, I had a much more pleasurable experience than the Paris Baguette incident of May.

My first impression of Enzo’s Table was that it was simultaneously confusing and impressive. I didn’t know if the vibe was as casual as I thought it would be, and I also wasn’t sure where to order or find a menu. Though I’ve never been inside an Erewhon (think of the Los Angeles version of Whole Foods), I imagined that the energy of those and that of Enzo’s Table are similar.

Don’t judge me — I still had massive brain fog from too much small talk and butter on Christmas.

After I walked past an aesthetically pleasing storefront with a seating room to the right, I stumbled upon the bar area. There was wine practically stacked to the ceiling and a coffee machine, and finally after searching the counter, I found the menus.

The aesthetic sort of resembles Otherside Café, but it has less of a study vibe and more of an elevated brunch vibe. Let’s just say, I’m glad I put a little effort into my look that day, because I wouldn’t want to walk in there without a little appearance fluffing.

I ordered an iced vanilla latte and the Fresno chili avocado toast, but without the chili. Don’t judge.

I tried, but I just can’t put a finger on how I felt about the customer service. The cashier was clearly a teenager, so I gave her some grace, plus the place is so new. That being said, I felt kind of tossed into the place, rather than nicely guided.

The ambivalent customer service was promptly washed away by the food and coffee — my God, it was good.

My latte was phenomenal, though if someone messes up a plain vanilla latte, they might be doomed. The toast was also great — the bread was toasted to perfection and the avocado was clearly fresh.

Also, the prices are pretty reasonable for an upscale café, store situation (whatever it is). My toast was $12, the Enzo farro salad is $11 and the classic minestrone soup is $8. An americano is $4 for 12 ounces, an iced latte is $5 and plain espresso is $3, for instance.

Not bad, Enzo’s.

I sat, read a copy of a newspaper that they had dispersed on the counter and really looked around.

There’s quite an echo in the place, probably to optimize the social feel. It’s also very subtly Italian, like if Fresno and Los Angeles wrung out the Italian countryside and juiced it into a cup.

An older man sat next to me and tasted a few of the wines. A girl from my class last semester came in with her friend (neither of us said hi, I fear). The vibes were high.

Enzo’s Table is open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

I find those hours to be a shame, since the place is right next to the new and booming Willow Osteria. In theory, one above the age of 21 could grab a glass of wine at Enzo’s Table before heading to Willow Osteria on a Saturday night out.

Really, all people want is something to do in Fresno in a safe, walkable area. We’re getting there, slowly but surely.

Overall, I rate Enzo’s Table an 8/10. I loved the product and general feel of the place, though it took some getting used to. I think that with enough development and growth, Enzo’s Table could really be something.

In the meantime, it’s just up the street from Fresno State’s campus, so give it a try between classes to spice up your day.

When I walked into Enzo’s Table, I forgot I was in Fresno for a split second.
