{"id":152887,"date":"2026-01-28T05:55:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T05:55:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/152887\/"},"modified":"2026-01-28T05:55:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T05:55:08","slug":"are-the-sacramento-kings-on-pace-to-secure-a-top-draft-pick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/152887\/","title":{"rendered":"Are the Sacramento Kings on pace to secure a top draft pick?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Sacramento Kings may not be able to declare that they are \u201ctanking\u201d for obvious reasons, but it\u2019s no secret that the franchise has its eyes set on the top of the 2026 NBA Draft.<\/p>\n<p>Through 48 games, Sacramento holds a 12-38 record, placing them just a half-game ahead of the New Orleans Pelicans for the worst record in the Western Conference.<\/p>\n<p>As we move closer to the NBA trade deadline (Thursday, February 5th at 12 pm PT), the Kings could make some moves that open up the rotation or give new players a look as first-year general manager Scott Perry evaluates the next steps for this top-heavy roster.<\/p>\n<p>Decision time is near for Perry and the Sacramento Kings, but what does that mean for the NBA Draft and NBA Draft Lottery? What exactly are the Kings chasing during the final half of what appears to be a lost regular season?<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at the updated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tankathon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Tankathon standings<\/a> and see where things stand.<\/p>\n<p>Tankathon Update: January 28, 2026<\/p>\n<p><img data-perfmatters-preload=\"\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-61451\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-27-at-9.33.11\u202fPM-1-300x109.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"718\" height=\"261\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>How The Odds &amp; NBA Draft Lottery Work<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"43\" data-end=\"485\">The NBA Draft Lottery is designed to give the league\u2019s worst teams the best chance at landing the top pick, while discouraging outright tanking.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"43\" data-end=\"485\">For a team like the Sacramento Kings, lottery odds come into play only if they miss the playoffs and finish in the bottom 14 of the standings.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"43\" data-end=\"485\">The three teams with the worst records each have a 14 percent chance to win the No. 1 overall pick, with odds decreasing incrementally by record.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"487\" data-end=\"800\">If the Kings finish, for example, with the seventh-worst record, they would have a 7.5 percent chance at the top pick and a much higher likelihood of landing somewhere in the middle of the lottery.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"487\" data-end=\"800\">The NBA Draft Lottery itself only determines the top four picks. After that, selections are ordered by regular-season record.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"802\" data-end=\"1104\">This system means Sacramento can move up, stay roughly where projected, or slide back\u2014sometimes significantly\u2014depending on how the lottery balls bounce. It\u2019s why even small differences in late-season standings matter.
