A well-known conservative activist in Northern California was arrested\u00a0last week\u00a0after an investigation revealed a\u00a0100-foot-long tunnel connected to an underground bunker\u00a0containing\u00a0a cache of illegal weapons,\u00a0ammunition\u00a0and body armor.<\/p>\n

In a\u00a0news release<\/a>, officials with the California Highway Patrol said an investigation\u00a0was launched after the agency received a tip about a suspected illegal\u00a0marijuana\u00a0grow\u00a0operation.<\/p>\n

CHP Air Operations conducted a flyover of the property in Anderson, a city about 150 miles north of Sacramento in Shasta County, and confirmed the information received.<\/p>\n

An\u00a0investigation into the property,\u00a0owned by\u00a0Michael Jay\u00a0Kamfolt, 40, lasted\u00a0approximately a\u00a0month before CHP executed a search warrant at the location on Jan. 20.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring the search, officers discovered an underground bunker accessible through a 100-foot-long culvert,\u201d the release noted. \u201cThe bunker was equipped with power, ventilation, a concrete floor with built-in drainage and the necessary supplies to cultivate marijuana.\u201d<\/p>\n

Officers also recovered 13 firearms, including three AR-15 style assault rifles, one of which was a \u201cghost gun\u201d without a serial number, a sawed-off shotgun and two firearms reported stolen, one\u00a0in 2016 and\u00a0the other in\u00a01978.<\/p>\n

In addition to the weapons, investigators located approximately 10,000\u00a0rounds of\u00a0ammunition, including armor piercing rounds, 30 high-capacity magazines and four soft body armor vests.<\/p>\n

In photos released by authorities, a television, armchair and a home gym\u00a0can be seen in the sprawling bunker, along with various wall decorations that included a\u00a0specific\u00a0type of historical American flag.<\/p>\n

Kamfolt, according to\u00a0numerous\u00a0media reports, is\u00a0a prominent conservative activist in Shasta County who has repeatedly\u00a0expressed concerns about voting fraud at\u00a0county\u00a0board of\u00a0supervisors\u00a0meetings.<\/p>\n

He is also, according to reporting from the\u00a0Los Angeles Times<\/a>, a staunch advocate of Shasta County Supervisor Kevin Crye,\u00a0who has been a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump\u2019s \u201cMake America Great Again\u201d movement. Crye narrowly survived a 2024 recall effort by\u00a050 votes.<\/p>\n

A day after\u00a0Kamfolt\u2019s\u00a0arrest, Crye posted a video on Facebook\u00a0seemingly addressing\u00a0the\u00a0incident but\u00a0never naming Kamfolt.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt came to my attention today that a supporter, and\u00a0I\u2019ll\u00a0even say a friend of mine, was arrested last night. My heart is truly broken\u00a0about the situation,\u201d\u00a0he said\u00a0in part<\/a>. \u201cI would really encourage people not to rush to judgment. Remember, we are innocent until proven guilty.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kamfolt\u00a0was arrested on suspicion of several misdemeanor and felony violations, including manufacturing a ghost gun, manufacturing an assault rifle, possession of a machine gun, converting a firearm into a machine gun and possession of armor penetrating ammunition.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis operation went far beyond an illegal grow. The combination of a hidden bunker and an alarming cache of illegal weapons and ammunition highlights the threat\u00a0posed\u00a0to public safety,\u201d CHP Northern Division Chief John Pinoli said. \u201cI am proud\u00a0of the tireless work of our Northern Division personnel that led to this arrest.\u201d<\/p>\n

Officials said that the investigation into\u00a0Kamfolt\u00a0remains\u00a0ongoing while detectives continue to follow\u00a0up on\u00a0additional\u00a0leads.<\/p>\n
