Investigators on Tuesday identified a driver who was shot and the San Diego police officer who wounded him at the end of a vehicle pursuit in the La Presa neighborhood of Spring Valley last week.<\/p>\n
Edwaun Walter Thames, 39, was shot by San Diego police Officer Henry Ingram Jr. after Thames led police on a 10-minute chase that ended when the vehicle he was driving collided with a light pole near Jamacha Road and Gillespie Drive, sheriff\u2019s homicide Lt. Juan Marquez said.<\/p>\n
Thames was taken to a hospital for serious but not life-threatening injuries, Marquez said. He was later booked on suspicion of evading arrest, possession of a stolen vehicle and vehicle theft.<\/p>\n
Ingram has been with the police department for two years and has worked in law enforcement for nine years. He is currently assigned to patrol at the Southeastern Division.<\/p>\n
The shooting is being investigated by the Sheriff\u2019s Office in accordance with a county memorandum that prevents local agencies from investigating their own officer-involved shootings.<\/p>\n
According to investigators, the incident began shortly after officers received a report around 12:40 p.m. of a stolen vehicle near Euclid and Imperial avenues in southeastern San Diego.<\/p>\n
Within an hour, police spotted the vehicle, and an officer attempted to pull it over on Imperial Avenue, Marquez said. The driver did not comply, and a pursuit began, investigators said.<\/p>\n
The vehicle drove over spike strips and eventually lost control and crashed into a light pole, which then fell on a police vehicle and caused minor injuries to the pursuing officer, sheriff\u2019s officials said.<\/p>\n
Thames allegedly exited the crashed vehicle. Ingram reported seeing what appeared to be a firearm on the ground near Thames, and when the driver allegedly reached for the weapon, the officer opened fire, Marquez said.<\/p>\n
