That means, it’s a dopey story, but you get to watch him beat up and shoot lots of bad guys. The head bad guy is played by the always reliable Bill Nighy. There’s a little girl that Statham is trying to keep alive. He plays an agent that was double-crossed and has to hide in an abandoned lighthouse. He’s discovered, goes on the run, and hijinks ensue! There’s a really cute dog in it. Wanna guess what happens to him? This has the best scene of a fork stabbing a face since “Weapons” last year. The shaky camera gets annoying, as does the little girl, who stops being cute early on. If you need your fix of a goofy action picture, this should fit the bill for ya. 1 ½ stars out of 5.

SEND HELP

The movie poster said “From the director of Evil Dead and Drag Me to Hell.” Maybe I’m old, but that doesn’t sound like a great selling point (that director is Sam Raimi). But he gave us a two-hander that’s a dark comedy, with a few scares, and lots of gore. The movie starts with Rachel McAdams going into her job, with Blondie’s “Rip Her to Shreds” playing. I’m already liking things. But they made her such a bizarre, nerdy character at the office, you almost realize why the bosses are passing her up on a big promotion. When they all fly out for a big deal that’s closing, the plane crashes. The movie then becomes a mix of “Blue Lagoon” meets “Misery” (with a bit of “Cast Away”). That boss (Dylan O’Brien) that treated her so bad, now has to rely on her to survive. The first half was brilliant, but the second half just goes too over the top. It’s hard to buy some of the things the characters are doing, and they do something with one of the characters that was a real mistake (I can’t explain without giving things away). Since 89% of movies have a vomit scene, this has one. And it’s hysterical. They stole a great scene from “Hard Candy” (Ellen Page), in which she’s getting revenge on a child molester. And it’s done nicely here. Danny Elfman did the score, and it ends with another perfect Blondie tune. People are going to have fun with this movie. 3 stars out of 5.

The month is coming to a close, and lots of fun things are happening this weekend.
