{"id":157620,"date":"2026-01-31T04:32:21","date_gmt":"2026-01-31T04:32:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/157620\/"},"modified":"2026-01-31T04:32:21","modified_gmt":"2026-01-31T04:32:21","slug":"mayor-lee-signs-executive-orders-to-limit-federal-immigration-activity-in-oakland-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/157620\/","title":{"rendered":"Mayor Lee signs executive orders to limit federal immigration activity in Oakland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee signed two executive orders Thursday that outline the city\u2019s response to immigration enforcement activity in the city.<\/p>\n<p>The first order sets up a task force to protect the city\u2019s immigrant communities and establishes that the Oakland Police Department will function independently if federal troops are deployed to the city.<\/p>\n<p>The second order prohibits federal agencies from using any city property for civil immigration enforcement operations.<\/p>\n<p>Both orders are in effect as of Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Rep. Lateefah Simon, D-Oakland, Alameda County Supervisor Nikki Fortunato Bas, Oakland city officials, and representatives from local immigrant support organizations joined Lee at Thursday\u2019s signing ceremony at City Hall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not going to allow our streets to be turned into combat zones,\u201d said Lee before signing the executive orders. \u201cWorkers are afraid to go to their jobs, families are afraid in their own neighborhoods, and this fear is unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first executive order that Lee signed calls for the formation of a \u201c<a id=\"https:\/\/www.oaklandca.gov\/News-Releases\/Mayor\/Mayor-Lee-Directs-City-to-Protect-Residents-from-Immigration-Surge\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oaklandca.gov\/News-Releases\/Mayor\/Mayor-Lee-Directs-City-to-Protect-Residents-from-Immigration-Surge\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" type=\"link\" target=\"_blank\">Protect The Town<\/a>\u201d task force to coordinate city departments\u2019 response to immigration enforcement in the city, and to inform and educate residents about the same.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor\u2019s office will also work with the city attorney\u2019s office and the California attorney general\u2019s office to pursue legal action <a id=\"https:\/\/localnewsmatters.org\/2025\/10\/24\/bay-area-leaders-call-for-calm-amid-troop-deployment\/\" href=\"https:\/\/localnewsmatters.org\/2025\/10\/24\/bay-area-leaders-call-for-calm-amid-troop-deployment\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" type=\"link\" target=\"_blank\">if federal troops are unilaterally deployed<\/a> to the city.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"771\" height=\"578\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/BCN-20260129-OAKLANDEXECORDER-03-771x578.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1568556\"  \/>(L-R): U.S. Rep. (Tanay Gokhale\/Bay City News)<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, the executive order prohibits Oakland police and other city departments from participating in any federal civil immigration enforcement in the city. OPD will not act under the direction of the National Guard or any other federal troops deployed in the city.<\/p>\n<p>OPD Interim Chief James Beere emphasized that residents should not hesitate to reach out to local police for help or to report suspicious activity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemember, it is safe to call 911,\u201d Beere said. To identify an OPD officer, \u201clook for a blue uniform, look for an OPD patch on their left arm, a badge on their left chest, and a nameplate on their right chest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The second executive order prohibits the use of city property as a staging area, processing location, or operational base for any federal civil immigration enforcement activity. City agencies will erect signage to that effect and physical barriers at such properties.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors approved a similar policy to <a id=\"https:\/\/localnewsmatters.org\/2026\/01\/29\/alameda-county-approves-ice-free-zones-immigration-response-plan\/\" href=\"https:\/\/localnewsmatters.org\/2026\/01\/29\/alameda-county-approves-ice-free-zones-immigration-response-plan\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" type=\"link\" target=\"_blank\">set up \u201cICE-Free Zones,\u201d<\/a> prohibiting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement from using county-owned property for their operations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1769833941_174_BCN-20260129-OAKLANDEXECORDER-04.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-174549\"\/>Alameda County Supervisor Nikki Fortunato Bas speaks ahead of Mayor Barbara Lee\u2019s signing of two executive orders that limit federal immigration enforcement in the city of Oakland, Calif., on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026.
