British golfer Justin Rose made quite a bit of history at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course this week.<\/p>\n

Rose led the tournament from beginning to end, a first in the 70-plus-year history of the Farmers Insurance Open<\/a>. At 45, he became the oldest player to ever win the tournament. And his seven stroke lead was a record margin of victory for a Farmers Open, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was aware of the big lead and I kind of wanted to play for that, for myself,\u201d he said in a
post-tournament interview. \u201cI was also aware that I\u2019d kind of grown the lead each day, so I
wanted to finish seven (strokes) ahead, rather than six.\u201d<\/p>\n

His win gave him a prize of $1.7 million.<\/p>\n

Three golfers tied for second place \u2014 Texas native Pierceson Coody, Si Woo Kim of South
Korea and Japan\u2019s Ryo Hisatsune \u2014 earning a little more than $1 million each. All three finished 16 strokes under par, far behind Rose\u2019s minus 23 strokes.<\/p>\n

But Brooks Koepka, who defected from the rival LIV Golf League<\/a>, garnered the most attention during a tournament that marked his return to the PGA Tour after nearly four years away.<\/p>\n

Koepka made the cut, but finished four shots under par, tied for 56th place.<\/p>\n

During a Sunday interview in which he was visibly tired, Koepka said he was still adjusting to
being back in the PGA.<\/p>\n

\u201cI probably don\u2019t know about half the guys (playing),\u201d he said. \u201cOver the past four years, there\u2019s been quite a bit of turnover. Half the guys I do know and the other half, I don\u2019t. It\u2019ll be a
fun year, just getting to know everybody. I\u2019m excited.\u201d<\/p>\n

San Diego natives dotted the tournament field, but none performed particularly well.<\/p>\n

Xander Schauffele\u2014 the PGA Tour\u2019s No. 4-ranked golfer, a Scripps Ranch
native and San Diego State graduate \u2014 didn\u2019t play during the weekend after struggling during opening rounds Thursday and Friday.<\/p>\n

He missed a birdie putt Friday on his final hole, missing the cut by one stroke and ending his streak of 72 straight cuts made. Schauffele last missed a cut at the 2022 Masters Tournament.\u00a0<\/p>\n

His streak of 1,391 days without missing a cut was the longest the longest since Tiger Woods went 142 consecutive tournaments without missing a weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously I don\u2019t like missing cuts, I think my record proves that, but it\u2019s actually kind of nice,
to be honest, if I was going to pick a spot,\u201d said Schauffele, who plays out of Bernardo Heights
Country Club. \u201cI get to hang out with my family.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I miss the cut in Charlotte or somewhere, I would just be sitting in a hotel room by myself. I
have the comfort of my family here to hang out,\u201d he told the media on Friday. \u201cYou know what?
All said and done, it\u2019s probably the best place to miss it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another SDSU product, world No. 7-RANKED J.J. Spaun, also missed the cut. The 2025 U.S. Open winner finished the first two rounds this week even, tied for 97th place.<\/p>\n

Two other locals also failed to advance to the later rounds: Charley Hoffman, a Poway High
School graduate playing in his hometown tournament for the 28th time; and Justin
Hastings, an SDSU alum making his Farmers Open debut as a sponsor exemption.<\/p>\n

Yet another local who had been slated to play, Michael Kim, withdrew days before the
tournament due to a back injury. Kim, who grew up in Del Mar and attended Torrey Pines High School, has said he intends to play in next year\u2019s tournament.<\/p>\n

Notes: This was the final time the event was being played under its current name. After 17
years, Farmers Insurance elected not to extend its title sponsorship after 2026. Starting next year, a different company\u2019s name will appear in the tournament\u2019s title. In the interim, the
tournament could go back to being known as the San Diego Open, as it was when it was
founded in 1952<\/p>\n
