Officials with the San Francisco Department of Public Health\u00a0issued a Jan. 29 alert<\/a>\u00a0about the outbreak and said that more than 50 people\u00a0in the school community have tested positive for latent\u00a0TB.<\/p>\n A person with active tuberculosis experiences symptoms and can spread the infection to others. With latent TB, a person does not develop symptoms and is not infectious to others.\u00a0Latent TB, however, can turn active at any time.<\/p>\n Health department officials urged health care providers\u00a0seeing\u00a0patients connected to the outbreak to look for signs of the infection.<\/p>\n Three active cases of tuberculosis have been identified since November 2025, and more than 50 people have tested positive for latent tuberculosis at a private school, Bay Area health officials said on Jan. 29, 2026. (Google Maps)<\/p>\n In an email obtained by\u00a0SFGATE<\/a>, school officials announced last week that in-person classes would be\u00a0suspended\u00a0and that students would study remotely through Feb. 9 with a transition model lasting through Feb. 20.\u00a0Staff and students who test negative after that date will be allowed on\u00a0campus,\u00a0and only those who have tested negative will be able to attend\u00a0indoor\u00a0off-campus activities, including sports events.<\/p>\n Massive 59-vehicle pile-up in dense fog on California highway <\/a><\/p>\n Tuberculosis outbreaks are\u00a0relatively\u00a0rare\u00a0but, according to the\u00a0California Department of Health<\/a>, the state\u2019s annual incidence rate was 5.4 cases per 100,000, which\u00a0is almost\u00a0double\u00a0the national incidence rate.<\/p>\n The treatable bacterial infection tends to affect the respiratory system but can move into other organs, require\u00a0hospitalization\u00a0and be fatal.<\/p>\n Symptoms include fever, chills, coughing, coughing up\u00a0blood\u00a0and weight loss.<\/p>\n An infectious disease expert at the University of California, San Francisco, Dr. Monica Gandhi\u00a0told\u00a0SFGATE<\/a>\u00a0that there is a TB vaccine\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0not typically administered in the U.S.<\/p>\n The doctor added that the TB is easily transmissible in close settings and called the three active cases at the high school \u201creally bad,\u201d the outlet reported.<\/p>\n Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
