That’s because an increase went into effect Jan. 1, costing the average customer about $4 more a month.

There are ways to reduce what you pay for electricity and gas, as well as water and other monthly bills like your cell phone and internet.

How to save on your SDG&E bill

SDG&E has several financial assistance programs you can apply for:

The California Alternate Rates for Energy (CARE) program provides a discount of 30% or more on your monthly energy bill. If you receive public assistance or have recently lost your job, you may qualify. If neither of those applies to you, then qualification is based on income.

If your income exceeds the limit for the CARE program, you may qualify for the Family Electric Rate Assistance (FERA) program. If approved, you will receive an 18% discount on your bill.

If you’re in one of the programs above and fall behind on your bill, you may be eligible for debt forgiveness through the Arrearage Management Plan.

There is also federal assistance to help if you have past-due bills. It’s called the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

If you’re experiencing temporary financial hardship and don’t qualify for other programs, there is a Neighbor-to-Neighbor Fund that may be able to help.

The Medical Baseline Allowance Program provides a discount to people who use qualified medical devices or have certain medical conditions.

The Energy Savings Assistance (ESA) program provides free home improvements, such as replacing appliances, to make your home more energy-efficient, saving you money. You must qualify by income level or by participating in specific public assistance programs.

If unexpected expenses pop up and you can’t pay your bill, the best thing to do is call SDG&E to set up a payment plan. Don’t just ignore the problem; letting them know you intend to pay will avoid any issues down the road. SDG&E says most customers are eligible for payment arrangements.

You can read more about all of the plans listed above and apply for them on SDGE.com.

How to save on your water bill

Adding water-saving technologies to your home can not only help lower your water bill, but you may also qualify for a rebate. You can find out more about rebate programs on the San Diego County Water Authority’s website.

If you need help paying your water bill, you should contact your local water provider.

Other resources for bill help and to reduce costs

There are also programs available to help you pay other monthly bills, too, such as your mobile phone and internet. You can find out more about those programs through 211 San Diego.

They can also connect you with other programs and organizations, whether you need help paying your bills or just navigating all of the programs out there. For example, Casa Familiar works with seniors, low-income residents and limited English speakers in southern San Diego County.

When you open your next SDG&E bill, it’s likely to be higher than the month before.
