{"id":161351,"date":"2026-02-03T03:55:15","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T03:55:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/161351\/"},"modified":"2026-02-03T03:55:15","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T03:55:15","slug":"sacramento-high-school-students-rally-against-ice-the-state-hornet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/161351\/","title":{"rendered":"Sacramento high school students rally against ICE \u2013 The State Hornet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Editor\u2019s note: The last names of certain sources have been kept anonymous for the sake of minimizing harm and protecting their safety.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Jan. 30, Sacramento high school students flooded the western steps of the State Capitol to protest the increasing nationwide presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.<\/p>\n<p>The protest, organized by students at McClatchy High School, started around 11 a.m. and continued into the afternoon, with the crowd increasing in size as waves of students arrived via light rail.<\/p>\n<p>Student organizers in blue vests were mixed among the crowd, including Nessa Wiener, one of the primary organizers of the protest and a student at McClatchy High School.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is beautiful,\u201d Wiener said. \u201cMost of the people here can\u2019t vote. We couldn\u2019t in the last election. So for us, this is the best way to make our voices heard and show how important it is to high schoolers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sacramento State alumna Lizette Gomez, attended the protest with her son, a ninth grader.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m proud that he\u2019s the one that texted me and said, \u2018Mom, people are walking out of the school. What should I do? Can I leave?\u2019\u201d Gomez said.<\/p>\n<p>Gomez said she encouraged her son to participate and believes the walkout is a good example for students to realize they have a voice in the matter.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-99052\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/EMBED12-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"  \/>Protesters hold up various signs criticising ICE and the American government in front of the California Capitol Friday, Jan. 30, 2026. (<a href=\"https:\/\/statehornet.com\/staff_profile\/jack-dann\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jack Dann<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The protest began at the steps of the Capitol, where students and other protestors congregated, before the crowd marched down the Capitol Mall toward the John Moss Federal Building.<\/p>\n<p>Protests have been occurring nightly at the building, the headquarters for ICE and Department of Homeland Security operations in the Sacramento area. The building is also the location of Sacramento\u2019s immigration court.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, two individuals, <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/minneapolis-ice-shooting-minute-minute-timeline-renee-nicole\/story?id=129021809\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Ren\u00e9e Good<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/02\/01\/us\/alex-pretti-minneapolis.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Alex Pretti<\/a>, were shot and killed by ICE agents in Minnesota, sparking public outcry.<\/p>\n<p>Protests have since surged nationwide following the shootings, while public pressure from prominent politicians such as <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CAgovernor\/status\/2017651088212861072?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Gov. Gavin Newsom<\/a> mounts for both DHS Secretary Kristi Noem\u2019s and President Donald Trump\u2019s Chief of Staff Stephen Miller\u2019s resignations.<\/p>\n<p>By the time they had begun to march, the crowd had ballooned into an estimated group of several thousand. As the students passed through the streets, they were joined by older protesters, who shouted words of encouragement.<\/p>\n<p>One of these supporters, Alicia, said she was overcome with emotion as she rallied behind the students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese children have been radicalized by living in today\u2019s U.S.,\u201d Alicia said. \u201cThey\u2019re on the streets because we made them this way. We\u2019ve failed to give them the future they deserve, so now they have to fight for it. They\u2019re doing what the adults ahead of them have failed to do: go out and let their voices be heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maura Sanford, a special education teacher, attended the protest in support of her daughter, who is enrolled at McClatchy High School. She said they attended the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nokings.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">No Kings\u201d protest<\/a> in October, and both felt inspired after partaking in an impactful rally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cry almost every night about what\u2019s happening. (<a href=\"https:\/\/statehornet.com\/staff_profile\/delaney-joyce\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Delaney Joyce<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Sanford said her school district, Folsom Cordova Unified, doesn\u2019t particularly support student walkouts and related it to the way she feels about the government encouraging division.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do work in a middle school, and I see the school district not taking care of bullying. They tell the victims to just deal with it, ignore it, whatever.
