BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK\/KBFX) \u2014 Community members participated in a protest on Friday afternoon in response to immigration enforcement across the country. It comes as people across the country participate in a “National Shutdown.”<\/a><\/p>\n

The protest happened in downtown Bakersfield.<\/p>\n

The shutdown calls for supporters to stay home from work and school and not go shopping in an effort to “stop funding ICE.”<\/p>\n

Organizers <\/a>said, \u201cThe people of the Twin Cities have shown the way for the whole country \u2014 to stop ICE\u2019s reign of terror, we need to SHUT IT DOWN. On Friday, January 30, join a nationwide day of no school, no work and no shopping.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several of the students who attended the protest were from Bakersfield High School.<\/p>\n

Students held signs that read “no one is illegal on stolen land,” “hate doesn’t make America great,” “melt ICE” and more. <\/p>\n

Claire Carrisalez, a senior at Bakersfield High School, said she came out to support those who live in fear because of ICE. “To be scared every single day and feel threatened every single day, when they shouldn’t have to be. They should be able to live their lives for the better,” Carrizalez said. <\/p>\n

She also emphasized the need to speak up stating, “this is illegal and inhumane and we have to speak up. We have to make a stand, because nothing will happen if we don’t speak up.” <\/p>\n

The protest was organized by a group of students who said they felt distraught and ashamed at what is going on in America. <\/p>\n

Chloe Sanchez, one of the organizers, shared that her grandparents are in the country legally. However, they are scared to go outside because they don’t speak English. <\/p>\n

Another student, Allona Webb urges the administration to stop. “Nobody should be being harmed. Nobody should be dying,” said Webb. <\/p>\n

Erick Ruvalcaba, one of the organizers, said “we need to start following all the amendments because they keep getting violated over and over again.”<\/p>\n

Students hope that after this protest people will come together, speak up and push for a change. <\/p>\n

An official with the Kern High School District provided a statement to Eyewitness News stating:<\/p>\n

The Kern High School District is aware of students participating in a nationwide walkout in protest of immigration concerns.The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. KHSD has protocols in place to ensure the safety and well-being of our students during these events. If students choose to walk out, we respect students’ rights to engage in peaceful protest and expression, consistent with their Freedom of Speech\/Expression.Our school sites place great value on instructional time and school safety.
