This two-session workshop focuses on the \u201cwhy\u201d and the \u201chow\u201d of moving towards high-power, high-participation negotiations. As workers face unprecedented attacks, the course teaches how big, open, and transparent negotiations are essential to building the power required to win under hostile conditions. Building from the book\u00a0Rules to Win By: Power and Participation in Negotiations, by Jane McAlevey and Abby Lawlor, the workshop is designed for unions at all stages of contract negotiations, including workers organizing for first contracts and those organizing for successor agreements. The course is open to groups of 10 or more. By the end of the workshop, each group will have produced a plan to open their collective negotiations practice using the skills they have learned.<\/p>\n

This six-session workshop teaches the core organizing methods required to build high-participation organizations. Participants learn skills such as organic leader identification, successful organizing conversations, workplace charting, and building organization through structure tests. The course\u2014intended for rank-and-file members and staff of unions, worker associations, worker centers, and community organizations\u2014is participatory, with a focus on role plays and practice. Skills to Win is open to groups of 20 or more. By the end of the workshop, each group will have made a plan to implement their new organizing skills in their own context. This training has simultaneous interpretation in Spanish.<\/p>\n

Power Structure Analysis (NEW!)<\/p>\n

This two-session workshop teaches the Power Analysis framework originated by California Calls founder Anthony Thigpenn\u00a0and expanded upon by Jane McAlevey into the Power Structure Analysis methodology.<\/p>\n
Power Structure Analysis challenges assumptions and expands understanding of how power is exercised. The process is collaborative and designed to democratize campaign strategy development, and concurrently provides political education for leadership, staff, members, and allies of unions and other organizations. While grounded in participants\u2019 own lived experiences and reflections, the Power Structure Analysis method also uses research to support comprehensive strategy-building.<\/p>\n
In this workshop, the goal is to teach participants how to perform high-quality and detailed Power Structure Analyses\u00a0and use them to develop strong, effective strategies specific to the landscape they are organizing within. The workshop was co-developed and will be co-facilitated by the Labor Center and California Calls.<\/p>\n
