Trump delivered<\/a> an address at the\u00a0World Economic Forum Annual Meeting<\/a> held between January 19 and 23 in Davos, Switzerland, where he launched into an apparently uncompromising restatement of his claims over Greenland, but suddenly ruled out the use of force to take over it, a crisis that had the global elite fearing he would upend the world order (archived here<\/a> and here<\/a>).<\/p>\n Vocal Trump critic Gavin Newsom, governor of California, called<\/a> Trump’s speech “jaw dropping” for an international audience, saying he had harmed US-European ties despite backing off his implicit threat of using force to seize Greenland (archived link<\/a>).<\/p>\n Newsom, who Trump has often referred to as “Newscum<\/a>,” was also scheduled to speak at a fireside chat<\/a> organised by media partner Fortune on January 21 but said he was denied entry<\/a> (archived here<\/a>, here <\/a>and here<\/a>).<\/p>\n He\u00a0blamed the Trump administration for the cancellation, while the White House questioned<\/a> his presence at the summit according to the BBC (archived here<\/a>).<\/p>\n The video was also shared on\u00a0Facebook<\/a>,\u00a0Threads<\/a>,\u00a0Instagram<\/a>, and\u00a0Douyin<\/a>.<\/p>\n But the original footage does not show Trump saying those remarks.<\/p>\n AI-generated<\/p>\n A reverse image search<\/a> on Google found a similar clip<\/a> published on January 21 on the official X account of C-SPAN, a US public affairs network\u00a0(archived link<\/a>).<\/p>\n It shows that Trump said he would ask for federal help to fight crime if he were Newsom, but did not use the dismissive nickname.<\/p>\n Screenshot comparison of the falsely shared X post (L) and the C-SPAN video <\/p>\n “We’re going to help the people in California. And we’re going to — if he needed it, I would do it in a heartbeat,” Trump said.<\/p>\n The official transcript<\/a> and\u00a0recording<\/a> of Trump’s address from WEF show him speaking on not taking Greenland by force, and on topics such as migration policies in Europe, the US economy and tariffs (archived here<\/a> and\u00a0here<\/a>).
