A U.S. marshal and a suspect were shot and wounded Tuesday morning, Oct. 21, during a traffic stop in South Los Angeles, according to the Department of Homeland Security.<\/p>\n

The shooting was reported about 8:50 a.m. in the 400 block of East 20th Street, according to Officer Luis Alanis, a spokesperson for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.<\/p>\n

ICE officers and U.S. marshals pulled over an \u201cillegal alien\u201d who had \u201cpreviously escaped from custody,\u201d in a targeted traffic stop, Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary for public affairs of the Department of Homeland Security, said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The suspect rammed his car into law enforcement vehicles and tried to flee, McLaughlin said.<\/p>\n

Officers fired weapons and hit the suspect in the elbow, she said, with the marshal getting hit in the hand by a ricocheting bullet.<\/p>\n

Both the officer and suspect are in a hospital.<\/p>\n

Los Angeles police officers were \u201cproviding outer perimeter traffic control at the scene of a federal investigation,\u201d according to a post by the department<\/a> on social media. No LAPD officer was otherwise involved in the operation, LAPD said.<\/p>\n
