{"id":163878,"date":"2026-02-04T18:28:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T18:28:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/163878\/"},"modified":"2026-02-04T18:28:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T18:28:09","slug":"san-diego-zoos-frozen-zoo-gets-genomic-boost-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/163878\/","title":{"rendered":"San Diego Zoo\u2019s Frozen Zoo Gets Genomic Boost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Illumina and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegozoowildlifealliance.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance<\/a>\u00a0announced a sequencing agreement Tuesday for the Frozen Zoo, a collection of biological samples from threatened and endangered species.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.illumina.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Illumina<\/a>, which specializes in DNA sequencing, will work on up to 4,000 samples representing 1,300 species in the Frozen Zoo. The data collected will be used for research into wildlife medicine, evolutionary biology and biodiversity preservation, according to a company statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIllumina is proud to partner with SDZWA to power the next era of the Frozen Zoo,\u201d said Cande Rogert, vice president and global head of advanced sciences at Illumina. \u201cThis collaboration is a wonderful example of the way multiomic technologies can activate the potential of these critical biodiversity biobanks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Multiomic research is a biological analysis approach in which the data consists of multiple \u201comes,\u201d such as the genome, epigenome and microbiome.<\/p>\n<p>Biobanks such as the Frozen Zoo serve as a repository of \u201cincreasingly fragile biodiversity,\u201d the statement continues.
