Wranglers play-by-play voice, Sandra Prusina, mentioned on the broadcast that between their two losses against the San Jose Barracuda last weekend and this game, the team had multiple meetings, including a players only meeting to help re-calibrate things. This game came as their first chance to get things going again with a one game stop against the Bakersfield Condors. They kept a close game for this one, but fell 3-2 in overtime.

Lineup notesThe Wranglers added a couple of players since their last game on Saturday. Justin Kirkland was placed on waivers by the Flames and cleared so he could be assigned to the AHL. Jeremie Poirier was also traded to the Dallas Stars’ organization for right shot defenceman, Gavin White. White made it to town in time for this game and wore jersey number eight. He played on a pairing with Nick Cicek, who just returned to the lineup after missing a game with a lower body injury from blocking a shot. Alex Gallant and Etienne Morin came out of the lineup for this game to make room for these players. Wranglers lines

Rory Kerins – Justin Kirkland – William Stromgren

Dryden Hunt – Sam Morton – Martin Frk

Carter King – Clark Bishop – Aydar Suniev

Parker Bell – David Silye – Lucas Ciona

Nick Cicek – Gavin White

Artem Grushnikov – Daniil Miromanov

Turner Ottenbreit – Simon Mack

Arsenii Sergeev

Game at a glance

The Wranglers started Arsenii Sergeev after he came in halfway through their last game to relieve Ivan Prosvetov. On the Condors’ end, they started Connor Ungar. The Condors got a little bit of the Flames vs. Oilers rivalry going early when Turner Ottenbreit was trying to bat down a puck that popped up in the Wranglers zone and was pushed down to the ice. This drew a crowd and play continued.

At 3:12, the first penalty of the game was called against Bakersfield for hooking. The Wranglers weren’t able to register a shot on goal in this man advantage but did give up a shorthanded chance. Around the midway mark of the period, Lucas Ciona and Brady Stonehouse were chirping each other and dropped the gloves around the Condors’ bench.

A fight between the Flames and Oilers affiliates. Lucas Ciona vs. Brady Stonehouse

The Condors led most of the chances through the second half but Gavin White was noticeably getting right into the plays and registered the last Wranglers shot of the frame. Through 20 minutes of play, the Wranglers and Condors were scoreless and shots were 10-5 for Bakersfield.

Both sides were looking for the first lamp lighter of the game into the second period and continued to exchange chances. At the nine minute mark, Riley Stillman was up in Martin Frk’s business and actually stopped the gloves and wanted to go. Frk passed on that opportunity and they both took offsetting roughing minors for the first penalties of the frame. Stillman for roughing and Frk for slashing.

At 12:29, Aydar Suniev and Turner Ottenbreit had a look in the offensive zone and Simon Mack managed to keep the puck in and passed it to Clark Bishop. Bishop went for the shot and it deflected off a Condor and into the back of the net. Mack and Ottenbreit were credited with the helpers on this opening goal.

Clark Bishop gets a frutitious bounce in front and makes it a 1-0 game for Calgary

Shortly after, the Condors answered back with a shot from Luke Prokop from the point to make it a 1-1 game. His goal came at 13:56. At 16:30, the Wranglers put Bakersfield on their first power play of the game when Dryden Hunt was called for tripping. Calgary killed off this penalty and the second period ended in a 1-1 tie. The shots through the middle frame were 14-9 for Bakersfield.

Just 24 seconds into the third period, the Condors took the lead with a one-timer from Isaac Howard. A few minutes later, Martin Frk and Rhett Pitlick collided and Frk needed some assistance on the ice before returning to the bench. Frk stayed in the game and this play turned into a tripping call against Pitlick.

The Wranglers came out with a five forward power play unit for this scenario that included Rory Kerins, Sam Morton, William Stromgren, Dryden Hunt and originally Martin Frk. The officials sent Frk back to the bench and Justin Kirkland took his spot instead. Calgary killed off this penalty and came out for the last few minutes of the game motivated for that next goal.

They pulled Arsenii Sergeev at 17:59, then Sam Morton found the back of the net at 18:55 off another deflection of a Condors skater in front. This was Morton’s fourth goal in three games and gave the Wranglers a chance back in this game.

Sam Morton with his fourth goal in three games to even up this game late in the third.

The last minute of play wrapped up and at the end of regulation, it was a 2-2 game and shots through the third were 8-4 Calgary. In overtime, Justin Kirkland, Rory Kerins and Nick Cicek came out for the first shift. Calgary’s best chance was 1:24 in when Dryden Hunt put up a shot off the body of Ungar. Unfortunately, the Condors took the puck the other way. Isaac Howard was up on the rush with another skater, Gavin White was between the Bakersfield players to break up the pass then Howard went for the shot on Sergeev’s blocker side and scored the game winner for his second goal of the night.

The Wranglers picked up a point but fell 3-2 in overtime. Shots in overtime were 2-1 Bakersfield and 30-23 overall for the home side.

Scoring stat summary

Turner Ottenbreit – 1A

Dryden Hunt – 1A

Clark Bishop – 1G

Justin Kirkland – 1A

Simon Mack – 1A

Sam Morton – 1G

Next up

The Wranglers went 0-2-1 on this road trip and return this weekend for some home action.
