Pacific Division rivals the Los Angeles Kings have acquired Panarin and signed him to a two-year extension ($11 million AAV).<\/p>\n<p>The NHL will have a big break during the <a href=\"https:\/\/sharkshockeydigest.com\/tag\/2026-winter-olympics\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"2555\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2026 Winter Olympic Games<\/a>, and on Wednesday, the league had a trade freeze starting at 3 p.m. ET. The expectation was for the Rangers winger to be moved before the deadline. Reports earlier in the day suggest the Rangers may have asked the San Jose Sharks for <a href=\"https:\/\/sharkshockeydigest.com\/tag\/will-smith\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Will Smith<\/a> as part of a return for Panarin.<\/p>\n<p>Trading Smith would be a very unlikely move and something the Sharks likely didn\u2019t entertain.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The New York Rangers reportedly asked for Will Smith from the Sharks &amp; Ryan Leonard from the Capitals in Artemi Panarin trade talks, but both teams said no, per <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MurphysLaw74?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">@MurphysLaw74<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/2gZt3Q3e3z\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/2gZt3Q3e3z<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; PuckEmpire (@puckempire) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/puckempire\/status\/2019114372568625243?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">February 4, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/p>\n<p>The Sharks checked in on Panarin\u2019s interest in coming to San Jose, as the winger has a full no-move clause. There was confirmed interest in signing an extension with the Sharks, but ultimately, the Kings were Panarin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MollieeWalkerr\/status\/2019142078543065550?s=20\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"(opens in a new tab)\">preferred destination<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The San Jose Sharks had the trade assets, better ones than the Kings, but Grier has opted to play the long-term game. A conditional third-round pick in 2026 and top prospect Liam Greentree were all that it took to acquire Panarin, who had 50% of his salary retained. <\/p>\n<p>With the Sharks just two points behind the Kings, both teams will be in a battle to get into the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs. San Jose went 2-1-0 against Los Angeles this season.
