It’s like a bite of s’mores, but without the campfire.

I ordered the shake at our local Bruxie near the Belmont Pier. When employee Andrea Alcantara served it, she thanked me for supporting Girl Scouts and asked if I had a connection to score the cookies locally.

Alcantara offered to send me the sales link for Long Beach Girl Scout Margaret, who has been supplying her cookies for years. This year, she and her fellow troop members have decided to skip the sales incentive prizes for themselves, instead opting to donate their earnings to their major project this year — helping out kids in foster care.

“We want to help purchase items that children in foster care often don’t receive, like suitcases,” Kuhlman said over the phone.

But the Girl Scouts will still get a reward from their hard work this year. If they meet their donation goals, they’re planning to celebrate with a trip to Disneyland.

Cookie distribution started in earnest on Jan. 31, with troops descending on Santa Anita Park and other distribution centers with SUVs, pick-up trucks, and u-hauls to collect their goods for the season.

“We distributed 2.6 million packages of cookies throughout Greater LA last Saturday. It was a huge effort, and a perfect example of Girl Scouts teamwork,” Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles CEO Theresa Edy Kiene, wrote in an email. “When you see Girl Scouts in your community – maybe at your front door – please support them.
