98.5 The Sports Hub host Mike Felger has responded to a San Francisco Chronicle columnist ripping the Boston media personality<\/a> for his \u201czombie apocalypse\u201d rant about the California city during Super Bowl week.<\/p>\n

Felger, Tony Massarotti, and \u201cBig Jim\u201d Murray have been out in San Fran<\/a> this week on Radio Row before Super Bowl 60 between the Patriots and Seahawks.<\/p>\n

During a Tuesday segment, Felger asked the \u201cFelger and Mazz\u201d panel about their thoughts of the Super Bowl host city.<\/p>\n

Massarotti said the city has \u201cplummeted\u201d in the last decade.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is filthy,\u201d Mazz said. \u201cYou know, there\u2019s crap all over the sidewalks. Dogs taking a leak practically on your feet. It\u2019s a mess. I used to love coming here, and I do like the food of the city, like the food here is great, but man, what a dump it has turned into.\u201d<\/p>\n

Felger said officials need to \u201cget a grip\u201d on the city\u2019s major open-air drug problem.<\/p>\n

\u201cHoly crap, like what has happened here?\u201d Mazz responded.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not just squalor, it\u2019s not just homelessness,\u201d Felger added. \u201cIt is the tweaked-out, drugged-out element that is too close to everything else.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s borderline post-apocalyptic,\u201d Mazz said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI deemed it the zombie apocalypse in 2016, and it is the zombie apocalypse,\u201d Felger said. \u201c\u2026 Like out of a horror movie, tweaked out, drug element is just, it\u2019s a lot. It\u2019s a lot\u2026 You\u2019ve gotta figure this out in some way, shape, or form.\u201d<\/p>\n

Felger had two pieces of advice for people heading to San Fran.<\/p>\n

\u201cHead on a swivel, just be aware of your surroundings, and seek higher ground,\u201d Felger said. \u201cThe higher you go, the neighborhoods automatically get a little nicer the higher you go, and I think it\u2019s because the zombies can\u2019t walk up the hills.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cFelger and Mazz\u201d hosts then came under fire for their comments in the San Francisco Chronicle.<\/p>\n

Their Culture Critic, Peter Hartlaub, took aim at the Boston radio personalities in a piece headlined, \u201cAre all Patriots fans this soft? Boston radio hosts mock S.F. in idiotic Super Bowl tirade.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hartlaub wrote, \u201cI\u2019ve seen the city\u2019s street dynamic bring out the best in people, locals and tourists alike. Some carry Narcan that will save a life. Some donate their money or time to places such as Glide Memorial Church or the St. Anthony Foundation. Some visit the city, see people hurting and dedicate the rest of their lives to helping.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd some go on their radio program to reveal just how much they\u2019ve failed at being a basic human being,\u201d the columnist wrote, later adding, \u201cA zombie apocalypse? Are all adult male Patriots fans this fragile and soft?\u201d<\/p>\n

The columnist wrote that the city is \u201can empathy test.\u201d<\/p>\n

Felger addressed the column during \u201cFelger and Mazz\u201d on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmpathy is not one of my great traits,\u201d Felger said. \u201cSo these quotes sound like I\u2019m not empathetic, for sure, guilty as charged. But I do have sympathy. That\u2019s why it\u2019s so hard to look at. It\u2019s so hard to look at these people in parts of the city, and I don\u2019t know how anyone can think it\u2019s OK.\u201d<\/p>\n

Felger noted that he does \u201creally like\u201d the city.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut what\u2019s going on outside of our hotel is not OK,\u201d Felger added. \u201cLike that\u2019s just not OK. And as a city, I can\u2019t believe that there are a significant number of people in this city who are OK with that\u2026 It blows me away, that I guess, the acceptance level of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The columnist called Felger a \u201csoft\u201d Patriots fan, but he actually grew up in Wisconsin and is a Green Bay Packers fan.<\/p>\n
