{"id":166041,"date":"2026-02-06T01:59:20","date_gmt":"2026-02-06T01:59:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/166041\/"},"modified":"2026-02-06T01:59:20","modified_gmt":"2026-02-06T01:59:20","slug":"we-got-a-first-peek-inside","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/166041\/","title":{"rendered":"We got a first peek inside"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">A glimpse of the ceiling is worth the price of admission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">On Friday evening, <a href=\"https:\/\/thecastro.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">The Castro Theatre (opens in new tab)<\/a> \u2014 arguably San Francisco\u2019s most magnificent movie palace \u2014 will reopen to the public after a two-year renovation with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a screening of the camp classic \u201cThe Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.\u201d Another Planet Entertainment, which took over management of the 104-year-old venue in 2022, spent $41 million (more than twice the initial estimate) to update the beloved theater \u2014 doing everything from installing new toilets and seats to polishing the chandelier.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">The work was not without controversy. Fearful of losing an icon of queer culture, a large, vocal segment of the LGBTQ+ community unsuccessfully <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2023\/06\/06\/castro-theatre-debacle-a-timeline-san-francisco\/\" data-post-id=\"43d7b421-7f19-4ce2-8bb7-d3570240db4f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fought<\/a> to turn management over to a nonprofit. Many were angry about the displacement of a nail salon and coffee shop that rented street-facing units inside the theater. Others bemoaned how the protracted closure reduced foot traffic in the <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2023\/03\/17\/these-2-globally-famous-neighborhoods-emerged-from-the-pandemic-with-completely-different-vibes\/\" data-post-id=\"4a3654fd-eceb-4839-9a97-e9125aa81339\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nightlife-heavy<\/a> neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">But after taking a tour of the new space, we suspect many critics will be awestruck by the results. It helps that the theater\u2019s recently released musical and cinematic <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/11\/04\/newly-renovated-castro-theatre-drops-amazing-concert-lineup\/\" data-post-id=\"ac816428-db7a-414d-a33a-93cfd95e1501\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">calendars<\/a> are replete with local talent and LGBTQ+ artists, crowned by a 20-date Sam Smith residency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">From basement to balcony, here is everything that\u2019s new at the Castro. There was asbestos. There was lead. Signs of neglect were everywhere, and standing water in the basement had eaten into the concrete walls.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cThey said, \u2018If this building just sits here as is on its own, in a few years, things are literally going to start falling,\u2019\u201d APE Senior VP Mary Conde recalled. So the sewage, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems are all new. Even the vestibule ticket booth\u2019s stained glass has been replaced. \u201cWe didn\u2019t cut any corners,\u201d Conde added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">For performers and talent, there are now three green rooms, all with updated facilities. From the perspective of the audience, there is a new movie screen, Dolby sound system, and digital projector. And the vertical neon sign, the neighborhood\u2019s biggest landmark, is fully functioning once again.<\/p>\n<p>The interior is beautiful \u2014 and ADA-compliant<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Above all, it will be hard not to get a crick in one\u2019s neck from staring up. Decades of accumulated cigarette smoke have been cleaned from the walls and ceiling, and the architect Timothy Pflueger\u2019s many art deco details are newly apparent. The only missing elements are two large movie posters, of \u201cBreakfast at Tiffany\u2019s\u201d and \u201cDer Blaue Engel,\u201d which the Nasser family \u2014 who own the theater \u2014 removed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">More important, the Castro is now more accessible. The angle of the floor \u2014 or \u201crake,\u201d in theater parlance \u2014 has been slightly reduced, with a lift installed, to ensure that wheelchair users aren\u2019t relegated to the front rows.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s smaller, and (almost) all the seats are new<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">The old Castro had a fixed capacity of 1,408. Now there\u2019s room for 1,385 standing patrons, dropping to 1,115 when the seats are installed. That\u2019s because the removable seats are slightly larger, with an additional 6 inches of space per row (allowing people to remain seated if their neighbor gets up for popcorn). And unlike the old, cramped, wooden seats, the new ones are cushioned, with ergonomic seat rests. One section of cast-iron seats in the balcony was deemed significant by the Historical Preservation Commission, meaning it cannot be removed or altered. So the seats remain, a testament <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2023\/02\/01\/massive-crowd-of-angry-cinephiles-show-up-for-public-meeting-on-castro-theatre-plan\/\" data-post-id=\"521a52c9-c2ac-44a8-918d-9a50d1df8745\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to the past<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are way more toilets<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">In a big change, the former men\u2019s room is now the women\u2019s room, and the women\u2019s room is now a \u201cmen\u2019s\/unisex\u201d room. But fans will have to wait a little longer to hear the familiar strains of Judy Garland\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sSr47vIUz94\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">San Francisco (opens in new tab)<\/a>.\u201d A new organ, weighing 1 ton, will be installed March 17.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cIt\u2019s the largest symphonic digital organ in the world,\u201d Conde said, noting that workers had to excavate 10 feet under the floor \u2014 by hand \u2014 to accommodate its considerable heft. \u201cWe had teams out here for months with a shovel and a wheelbarrow, removing one scoop of dirt at a time.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A glimpse of the ceiling is worth the price of admission.
