Image via YouTube<\/a>.<\/p>\n California congressman Rep. Jared Huffman paid tribute to Bob Weir on Wednesday by going barefoot on the House floor. Huffman, a Democrat who has served as the U.S. representative for California\u2019s 2nd congressional district since 2013, rose to speak to the late Grateful Dead guitarist\u2019s legacy in his home of Mill Valley, Calif. Huffman\u2019s comments were captured in full on C-SPAN<\/p>\n \u201cI rise to honor the extraordinary life and legacy of my constituent and the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Bob Weir,\u201d Huffman advanced to the podium and extolled. \u201cBob was more than a musical icon; he was a neighbor, a friend, and a beloved part of our North Bay community for decades. Bob made his home in Marin, raised his family there, and opened his doors to other artists and helped build the vibrant local music vibe that so many of us cherish. He played intimate shows at Mill Valley\u2019s Sweetwater, and took the stage at the Mountain Theater atop Mt. Tamalpais.<\/p>\n \u201cBob\u2019s music, his generosity and unmistakable creative spirit helped define the identity of the North Coast,\u201d he continued. \u201cHis memory will endure every time a kid picks up a guitar, every time the lights come up at the Sweetwater, every time music echoes across Mt. Tam. We are grateful that he made our community a part of his life, and we send our love to his family, his friends and all my fellow Deadheads across the world.\u201d<\/p>\n In closing, Huffman addressed the elephant in the room.\u201d Mr. Speaker, let the record reflect I delivered these remarks barefoot in honor of Bobby Weir,\u201d he laughed. \u201cI think he would appreciate that.\u201d Huffman\u2019s tribute was met with a reminder from the speaker pro tempore to observe proper decorum on the floor.<\/p>\n Weir passed away on Jan. 10 at 78. The iconic singer, songwriter and guitarist was a lifelong resident of Bay Area and moved to Mill Valley in the mid \u201970s. He became a vital fixture and guide for the region\u2019s musical community in his decades of residence, and following his passing, friends from the area expressed their gratitude through a public memorial gathering<\/a> and several musical celebrations, including the Howling Wolves<\/a> tribute at The Warfield.<\/p>\n
