{"id":166890,"date":"2026-02-06T16:42:14","date_gmt":"2026-02-06T16:42:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/166890\/"},"modified":"2026-02-06T16:42:14","modified_gmt":"2026-02-06T16:42:14","slug":"3-plead-guilty-after-death-of-security-guard-kevin-nishita-in-oakland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/166890\/","title":{"rendered":"3 plead guilty after death of security guard Kevin Nishita in Oakland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/cuukcp31m2i3y21w.jpg\" alt=\"3 plead guilty after death of security guard Kevin Nishita \" class=\"sr-only\" data-v-4292be72=\"\"\/>   <\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">OAKLAND, Calif. &#8211; Before their trial scheduled for next month, three suspects charged in the murder of Kevin Nishita have pleaded guilty.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">Nishita was shot and killed in November 2021 while working as a security guard protecting a television news reporter in Oakland.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">Laron Gilbert pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and is expected to be sentenced to 30 years to life in prison.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">His accomplices, Sahdihia Mitchell and Hershel Hale, pleaded no contest to robbery charges.<\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Nishita.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-v-0dea8073=\"\"\/>  <\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">Gilbert originally faced 189-years-to-life in prison, and the others faced 151 to 178 years if convicted as originally charged, the East Bay Times reported.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2026\/02\/05\/with-murder-trial-looming-3-take-deals-in-killing-of-ex-san-jose-cop-who-worked-as-kron4-security-guard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">According to the East Bay Times, which was the <\/a>first to report the development, Nishita\u2019s loved ones were seen weeping in open court as the deal was announced Thursday morning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">The three were set to go on trial in March, a case that was expected to last months.
