But this player\u2019s stats are a bit unusual: weighing in at less than 10 pounds and standing under 12 inches tall, Foggy, a 3-month-old, black-and-white puppy, is making history as the first competitor from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/no-weekends-allowed-sf-shelters-20036063.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals<\/a> to appear at the Puppy Bowl.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-channels-pixel.ex.co\/events\/0012000001fxZm9AAE?integrationType=DEFAULT&amp;template=design%2Farticle%2Fplatypus_two_column.tpl\" alt=\"\" class=\"x1px y1px vh abs\" aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Airing on Animal Planet and other channels at 11 a.m., Puppy Bowl 22 will feature Foggy decked out in an orange bandana, representing Team Ruff.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The event, which <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/puppy-bowl-history-8787291\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">started off as a joke<\/a>, has become a cultural phenomenon. Last year, Animal Planet executives told People the Puppy Bowl counterprogramming was inspired by the seasonal, crackling <a href=\"https:\/\/ondemand.spectrum.net\/tv\/animal-planet\/14905843\/puppy-bowl-yule-log\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Yule Log<\/a> on television and <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/puppy-bowl-history-8787291\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">launched in 2005<\/a> with a shoestring budget of $88,000. Vassallo\u2019s parents met and fell in love with Foggy, who now lives with them on 2 acres in the Sacramento area. \u201cThey\u2019re her forever family and she \u2014 and it\u2019s so nice that she gets to still be part of our family,\u201d\u00a0Lightner said.<\/p>\n<p>The show rundown<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s broadcast is bigger than ever, featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/press.wbd.com\/us\/media-release\/animal-planet\/cutest-showdown-sports-puppy-bowl-xxii-returns-sunday-february-8-2pm-et11am-pt\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">150 rescue puppies from 72 shelters<\/a> around the United States, Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands. In order to capture the most eye-achingly cute moments, cameras are also placed under glass water bowls. \u201cShe was really obsessed with going back and drinking water \u2026 she shoved her whole face in the water at one point,\u201d said Lightner of Foggy\u2019s scene-stealing antics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the actual Super Bowl, the Puppy Bowl is pre-recorded to allow ample time for editing. Filming took place in October at the Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls, New York, where the event has been recorded for the past few years.
