OAKLAND \u2014 A man who allegedly drove drunk into an intersection and crashed into a big rig \u2014 killing a passenger and injuring everyone involved \u2014 has been arrested, five years after prosecutors charged him.<\/p>\n
Travon Troupe, 39, of Hayward, allegedly drove drunk through a red light at Foothill Boulevard and 68th Avenue in Oakland, smashing into a big rig that had the right of way. The July 13, 2020 crash caused a fire, and Oakland police said they only realized Troupe was drunk after pulling him out of his burning car, where flames were spreading to the driver\u2019s seat.<\/p>\n
Troupe\u2019s blood-alcohol level was measured at nearly twice the legal limit, according to the charging documents. Details surrounding Troupe\u2019s arrest last month haven\u2019t been made public.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors charged Troupe with vehicular manslaughter in the death of a passenger, Tahara Day, 31, and with drunk driving, causing injury to another passenger in Troupe\u2019s car and the driver of the big rig. Troupe was charged in February 2021, but only arrested last December, despite the fact that he appears to have remained in the Bay Area all that time, according to court records.<\/p>\n
Troupe was released from jail after posting $50,000 bail and has been attending alcohol-addiction meetings, per a judge\u2019s order, court records show.<\/p>\n
Day\u2019s obituary says she left behind a son and eight nieces and nephews, among other family members.<\/p>\n
