Patients being treated with radiation therapy at UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center can now access the latest technology. As of this week, the\u00a0Accuray Radixact System<\/a>\u00a0is operational, marking a major advance in delivering precise, efficient and personalized radiation therapy.<\/p>\n

The cancer center is the first in the region to offer the new type of radiation treatment.<\/p>\n

The new system was unveiled at a celebratory ribbon cutting Feb. 3. Cancer center leaders showcased how Radixact delivers radiation in a continuous 360\u2011degree pattern and uses CT imaging to guide treatment. This enables clinicians to shape radiation beams to each patient\u2019s tumor with great accuracy while reducing the risk of damage to nearby healthy tissue.<\/p>\n

The upgraded Radixact platform supports a wide range of cancers, including those found in the brain, head and neck, lung, prostate and female reproductive areas.<\/p>\n

The system\u2019s arrival follows a renovation of the\u00a0UC Davis Department of Radiation Oncology<\/a>\u00a0treatment suite, located in the lower level of the cancer center\u2019s south building on the\u00a0UC Davis Health<\/a>\u00a0Sacramento campus.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis new technology is engineered to improve accuracy, reduce side effects and make treatments more efficient \u2014 often in less time,\u201d said Andrew Harrell, radiation oncology manager. \u201cThe Radixact has real\u2011time motion tracking, advanced imaging before each session and sophisticated beam\u2011shaping tools that allow radiation doses to match the unique characteristics of each tumor.\u201d<\/p>\n

The new system replaces the department\u2019s\u00a0linear accelerator<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat makes Radixact so impactful is its ability to adapt to a patient\u2019s ever changing needs at the point of care,\u201d said cancer center Physician-in-Chief\u00a0David Tom Cooke<\/a>. \u201cFor example, if a tumor shrinks, changing the patient\u2019s anatomy during treatment, the system\u2019s built\u2011in imaging allows the team to adjust immediately, ensuring optimal care throughout the entire course of therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n
