Almost exactly two years after it went dark for an extensive renovation, the crown jewel of the city\u2019s gayborhood has returned with a <a href=\"https:\/\/thecastro.com\/calendar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">packed calendar (opens in new tab)<\/a> of concerts and cinema, headlined by Sam Smith\u2019s monthlong residency starting Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">During the closure, the area\u2019s restaurant and bar scene saw lots of <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2023\/03\/17\/these-2-globally-famous-neighborhoods-emerged-from-the-pandemic-with-completely-different-vibes\/\" data-post-id=\"4a3654fd-eceb-4839-9a97-e9125aa81339\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">churn<\/a>. While the Castro has been <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/01\/29\/castro-neighborhood-resurgence-post-panemic\/\" data-post-id=\"1bc3be68-97a1-48ec-b348-e0d7eb013938\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on the upswing<\/a> this year, anyone looking to make a full evening out of a show will be navigating a very different nightlife landscape. To help you make the most of your evening, here are our picks for where to get a preshow snack or a full dinner \u2014 and where to keep the party going afterward.<\/p>\n<p>Where to grab dinner before a show<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Anchor Oyster Bar<br \/>Castro restaurants may <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2026\/01\/26\/cafe-flore-parasol-opening\/\" data-post-id=\"0d66b80c-4af7-4f95-b24e-323e39f4ac2c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">come and go<\/a>, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anchoroysterbar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Anchor Oyster Bar (opens in new tab)<\/a> has been a fixture since Harvey Milk ran for supervisor. The ultimate spot for cioppino, crab cakes, and a dozen oysters on the half shell, it has one of the Castro\u2019s most charming parklets. But plan ahead: The restaurant does not take reservations and closes at 8 p.m., and the wait list frequently fills up by 7. 579 Castro St.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Blind Butcher<br \/>Intimate, dimly lit, and with a dining room that opens to the sidewalk outside, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blindbutcher.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Blind Butcher (opens in new tab)<\/a> is the Castro\u2019s only full-service new American restaurant. It\u2019s as meaty as the name suggests, with pork chops, ribeye, and a rack of lamb alongside smaller bites like shishito peppers, truffle lobster mac and cheese, and \u201coctopodaki,\u201d a spicy, citrusy preparation of octopus over chickpeas. For starters, it\u2019s the most quintessentially New York-style slice shop, and its consistently brisk business means fresh pies emerge from the oven practically until closing (11 p.m. on weekdays, 1 a.m. on weekends). It\u2019s also right across the street from the theater, meaning anyone short on time can dash over for a $7 slice of pepperoni on a white paper plate. 420 Castro St.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Aegean Delights<br \/>This 5-year-old confectionery right out of Greek myth \u2014 yes, that is a statue of Poseidon reclining in the front window \u2014 offers various flavors of baklava and Turkish delight, the latter in both cube and roll form, as well as coffee and tea. Also offering mosaic lamps and evil-eye necklaces, it\u2019s as much a shop as a bakery. As it\u2019s open until 9 p.m. daily, it makes a great spot for a sweet pre-theater snack on date night. 545 Castro St.<\/p>\n<p>The best bars for a quiet drink<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Last Call<br \/>With all due respect to the peerless Twin Peaks, that theater-adjacent bar is likely to be mobbed as soon as a show at The Castro gets out. Instead, walk around the block to plant-filled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lastcallbarsf.com\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Last Call (opens in new tab)<\/a>, a smaller, quieter, and equally lovely place for a cocktail. Unlike Twin Peaks, it would never be described as library-like \u2014 the jukebox is one of San Francisco\u2019s best, and there\u2019s likely to be movies playing on the screens \u2014 but it\u2019s an oasis all the same.\u00a03988 18th St.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Lobby Bar<br \/>The recently revamped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lobbybarsf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Lobby Bar (opens in new tab)<\/a> on the ground floor of the Hotel Castro is perhaps the most <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/09\/16\/url-no-caps-use-hyphens-lobby-bar-castro-speakeasy-lgbtq\/\" data-post-id=\"4f7935f7-8029-47fb-bf9d-035918404e90\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">elegant and sophisticated<\/a> bar in the Castro, and one of the neighborhood\u2019s few trans-owned spaces. Mixologists pour craft cocktails like the D-E-Rye Hire, a spirit-forward combination of rye, bourbon, amaro ciociaro, sweet vermouth, angostura, and chocolate bitters ($17). Whether it\u2019s hosting drag shows, watch parties, house-and-disco nights, or guest DJs from underground parties such as Quiche, Lookout all but guarantees a boozy good time. A long-teased renovation is in the works for later this year, but for now, the view from the balcony is unparalleled. 3600 16th St.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Q Bar<br \/>It was closed for years due to a fire, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/qbarsf\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Q Bar (opens in new tab)<\/a> roared back to life in late 2024 as a <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2024\/12\/06\/q-bar-reopens-castro\/\" data-post-id=\"95aca446-cb50-4524-88f0-886761a49dea\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">small yet bumping<\/a> club.
