\n\tThis year\u2019s Super Bowl<\/a> halftime show has become a political football \u2014 and California Gov. Gavin Newsom<\/a> is all too happy to pick it up and run with it.<\/p>\n

\n\tNewsom, who is widely expected to run for president in 2028, announced that Sunday, Feb. 8, will be \u201cBad Bunny<\/a> Day\u201d in California, praising the singer\u2019s \u201csoothing, beautiful voice\u201d and \u201chis very nice looks.\u201d Newsom also took a shot at Kid Rock<\/a>, the MAGA-backer who will headline Charlie Kirk\u2019s Turning Point USA rival show<\/a> during Super Bowl LX\u2019s halftime, needling him after artists have pulled out of Kid Rock\u2019s Rock the Country<\/a> festival and reprising the running gag that he has been \u201cbanned\u201d in the Golden State.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAs many people know, I am a tremendous lover of \u2018The Spanish,’\u201d according to a post<\/a> Saturday by Newsom\u2019s official press office account on X \u2014 in all caps, mocking Donald Trump\u2019s famous social media style. Spanish \u201cis a beautiful language spoken by many beautiful people in the great State of California and across the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNewsom\u2019s post continued, \u201cI am also a huge fan of Puerrrrrrrto Rico,\u201d the U.S. territory where Bad Bunny lives. \u201cThat is why I am declaring tomorrow in California as \u2018Bad Bunny Day\u2019 when Bad Bunny performs at the big game in the Golden State.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe post added, \u201cWe love Bad Bunny! He is nearly as \u2018hot\u2019 as me, which is a big compliment, because there is nobody \u2018hotter.\u2019 Happy Bad Bunny Day, America. Enjoy!! \u2014 Governor GCN.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe NFL\u2019s selection of Bad Bunny as this year\u2019s Super Bowl halftime act made many MAGA supporters unhappy<\/a>, because he sings in Spanish and because he has spoken out against the Trump administration\u2019s brutal ICE immigration crackdown. After the Puerto Rican superstar was announced as the halftime performer, Trump claimed<\/a> that \u201cI\u2019ve never heard of him\u201d and \u201cI think it\u2019s absolutely ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a counterprogramming move, conservative group Turning Point USA is staging \u201cThe All-American Halftime Show,\u201d which will be livestreamed online Sunday<\/a> at the same time Bad Bunny will take the field at Levi\u2019s Stadium in Santa Clara at the Super Bowl. Kid Rock is the headliner of the TPUSA concert.<\/p>\n

\n\tNewsom\u2019s press office, in a separate post<\/a> Saturday, cited the cancellation of Kid Rock\u2019s Rock the Country performances in South Carolina this summer after Shinedown became the fourth artist to bail on the event<\/a>. \u201cKid Rock is banned from California. And now he is being banned in more places,\u201d the governor\u2019s office said. \u201cTerrible music. Why is he so angry?\u201d (Kid Rock is not actually banned from performing in California.)<\/p>\n

\n\tBad Bunny, the most-streamed artist on Spotify<\/a> globally in 2025,\u00a0made history at the 2026 Grammys as the first Spanish-language artist to win album of the year<\/a>\u00a0for his hit album \u201cDeb\u00ed Tirar M\u00e1s Fotos.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn an interview this past week on Apple Music ahead of the Super Bowl, Bad Bunny said the halftime performance is \u201cgoing to be a huge party.\u201d<\/a> <\/p>\n

\n\tThe Latino superstar, when he hosted \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d in October, had joked that people have \u201cfour months to learn Spanish.\u201d<\/a> This week, he said<\/a>, \u201cI know that I told them that they had four months to learn Spanish. They don\u2019t even have to learn Spanish. It\u2019s better if they learn to dance. There\u2019s no better dance than the one that comes from the heart, the heartbeat dance, that\u2019s the only thing they need to worry about and enjoy. And of course choose your team at the game.\u201d <\/p>\n
