\u201cIt\u2019s about a culture of confidence,\u201d Curtis said. \u201cWe won the body language game, so even when we\u2019re down in halftime, nobody is hanging their head. We\u2019re talking about positive framing and teaching to our coaches. We\u2019re talking about looking to the guy next to us and believing in each other and telling each other and speaking that confidence into ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Bruins improved to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the Moore League. It was Wilson\u2019s first win over Poly since 1991, which was also the last time the program won an outright league title.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is our practice,\u201d Curtis explained. \u201cWhat you saw in that victory is what we practice, and we came out and we executed well.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Bruins are in sole possession of first place in the league standings. They will clinch at least a share of the league title with a win at home Friday against Long Beach Jordan. Wilson can secure the outright league championship against Lakewood on Oct. 30.<\/p>\n
Curtis said his coaching staff and the team\u2019s players have fully embraced his concept of game theory<\/a>. Wilson never attempted a PAT in the game. Instead the Bruins chose to go for 2-point conversions after all three of its touchdowns. They converted two of the three conversion attempts.<\/p>\n \u201cGame theory is only we know the rules,\u201d Curtis said. \u201cOnly we know the game.\u201d<\/p>\n Wilson senior quarterback Mack Cooper completed 7 of 12 passed for 130 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Cooper\u2019s first pass went for an 80-yard touchdown to senior receiver Thomas Jones, which made it 7-6. Wilson\u2019s 2-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful.<\/p>\n Sophomore receiver Kyle Harris\u2019 92-yard kick return for a touchdown and a 2-point conversion by Branden Cruz cut Poly\u2019s lead to 21-14.<\/p>\n Sophomore running back Jemel Grigsby\u2019s 2-yard touchdown run and a 2-point conversion by Brooklyn Vega secured the 22-21 victory.<\/p>\n \u201cIt starts with everyone on the team,\u201d said Cooper, a three-year starter who is committed to Prairie View A&M. \u201cIt\u2019s a team sport. I don\u2019t give props to anyone but everybody on the team.\u201d<\/p>\n Wilson is ranked No. 50 in the CIF Southern Section by HSRatings.com, which would likely slot the Bruins into Division 4 for the playoffs.<\/p>\n Curtis wants his program to be respected as one of the best teams in Southern California.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re going to find ourselves somewhere where we want to be, which is in the upper echelon of schools around,\u201d Curtis said. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to squeak our way.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re not trying to fandangle our way into a lower division. We want to reach for the top. We want to believe in our talent. I keep hearing about everybody else\u2019s talent and I think it\u2019s time for people to respect what we have over here. So if anything else, it\u2019s time for everyone to respect Wilson.
