OAKLAND, Maine (WABI) – The return of a highly anticipated hockey tournament this weekend saw hundreds of players in Oakland take to the outdoors.<\/p>\n
The Maine Pond Hockey Classic returned for its 14th year. The event saw 66 registered teams gather for a 4-on-4 tournament at Camp Tracy on McGrath Pond. <\/p>\n
Teams who competed in the tournament hail from all over the country.<\/p>\n
All proceeds from the event go towards supporting the Alfond Youth and Community Center, with this year\u2019s goal being $50,000 raised. <\/p>\n
Tournament organizers and players say that with each passing year, the community spirit has yet to melt away. <\/p>\n
\u201cI think the biggest thing I like is the atmosphere of the camaraderie, which is really dictated by the players of the teams,\u201d says Tournament Director Patrick Guerette.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou see out handshake lines after every game, people grabbing a beer after the game. It\u2019s fun and competitive hockey.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a ton of fun, part of it is getting in our group together and the whole team getting to see each other. We don\u2019t see each other much outside of this and then being able to look around and see hockey in every direction across the open lake, it\u2019s really fun,\u201d says Wesley Woods, who competed this year as part of the Chapel St. Saints. <\/p>\n
The Maine Pond Hockey Classic will return next weekend, with a youth competition scheduled for February 14th and 15th.<\/p>\n
