In a thrilling double-overtime faceoff, Cal State Fullerton women\u2019s basketball prevailed with a slim 92-87 victory over Cal State Bakersfield at Icardo Center.<\/p>\n
Sophomore forward Cristina Jones continued to be the engine running the Titans\u2019 offense, mustering a monster double-double \u2013 totaling a career-high 35 points and 20 rebounds. Jones recorded the first 20\/20 game in 26 years for CSUF, the fifth time it has happened in the program\u2019s history.<\/p>\n
CSUF fired on all cylinders during the first quarter, shooting 56% from the field while dominating the Roadrunners in the interior, 16-10.<\/p>\n
The Titans also forced six CSU Bakersfield turnovers, paving the way for an early 11-0 run.<\/p>\n
Nonetheless, the Roadrunners countered with four second-chance points and crucial shots by fifth-year guard Maria Dias and 6-foot-3 center Tena Ikidi to trim CSUF\u2019s lead to one.<\/p>\n
The Roadrunners maintained their newly found energy going into the second quarter, going 62.5% from the field and 6-for-8 at the charity stripe.\u00a0<\/p>\n
With the Titans unable to replicate their early firepower, the game became tightly contested with neither team taking a lead greater than four.<\/p>\n
CSUF went into halftime up narrowly, leading by just two points.<\/p>\n
Both teams continued exchanging baskets in the third quarter with CSUB winning the turnover battle, only coughing up the ball twice.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Roadrunners also bested the Titans in the paint, 12-8.\u00a0<\/p>\n
CSUF remained unfazed in the fourth quarter, taking a 68-63 lead off a timely layup by sophomore guard Jana Falsdottir with 4:22 left.<\/p>\n
However, a late foul by forward Talia Maxwell allowed guard Chrishawn Coleman to make a game-tying free throw with 22 seconds left, sending the game to overtime, 72-72.<\/p>\n
The stalemate went on during the first overtime with each team scoring only nine points.<\/p>\n
Ultimately, the Titans turned the tide with 4:03 left in the second overtime as freshman Dylan Swindle made a three-pointer that put CSUF up by three.<\/p>\n
Frequent Roadrunner fouls also sent Swindle, Maxwell and Jones to the charity stripe. Swindle converted the Titans\u2019 game-sealing free throw with 24 seconds left.<\/p>\n
The Titans will return to Titan Gym for their rivalry matchup, \u201cBeat the Beach night,\u201d against No. 9 seeded Long Beach State on Thursday, Feb. 12.<\/p>\n
