{"id":17058,"date":"2025-10-22T02:39:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T02:39:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/17058\/"},"modified":"2025-10-22T02:39:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T02:39:08","slug":"long-beach-public-library-to-host-liwanag-literary-festival-this-weekend-press-telegram","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/17058\/","title":{"rendered":"Long Beach Public Library to host Liwanag Literary Festival this weekend \u2013 Press Telegram"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.longbeach.gov\/library\/events\/?trumbaEmbed=view%3Devent%26eventid%3D189744237\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Liwanag Literary Festival<\/a> \u2013 a celebration of Filipino American stories, voices and culture \u2013 will return to Long Beach this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The free festival, hosted by the Long Beach Public Library, will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25,\u00a0 at the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library, 5870 Atlantic Ave.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Liwanag Literary Festival is a shining example of how stories connect us and a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the deep diversity that makes Long Beach so special,\u201d Mayor Rex Richardson said in a statement. \u201cBy uplifting Filipino American voices, we honor a community whose culture and contributions enrich our city every single day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The festival is presented in collaboration with Bel Canto Books, a beloved Filipina-owned independent bookstore in Long Beach, according to a press release. It will feature story times and craft activities for children, along with panel discussions and readings from a diverse lineup of authors.<\/p>\n<p>Featured guests will include Mae Respicio, author of \u201cIsabel in Bloom\u201d; Florante Ibanez, author of \u201cFilipinos in Carson\u201d; Randy Ribay, author of \u201cEverything We Never Had\u201d; and Shelby Rabara and Harry Shum Jr., co-authors of \u201cMartee Dares to Dance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"The Long Beach Public Library will be hosting the third...\" class=\"size-article_inline\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>The Long Beach Public Library will be hosting the third biennial Liwanag Literary Festival on Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library. Attendees can enjoy traditional baked goods from Gemmae Bakery, browse Filipino komiks (comics) from Hot Tropiks, explore language resources with Tayo Na Lending Library, and shop handmade jewelry, art and accessories from Native Sol.<\/p>\n<p>The Liwang Literary Festival, which began as an annual event in 2022, will now be held biennially, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiwanag\u201d means light in Tagalog, reflecting the festival\u2019s mission to shine a light on the rich traditions and contributions of Filipino Americans, officials said, especially during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presstelegram.com\/2025\/10\/07\/long-beach-hosts-4th-annual-filipino-american-history-month-celebration\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Filipino American History Month<\/a> in October.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Long Beach Public Library, we are proud to provide opportunities that celebrate culture, honor history, and inspire learning,\u201d Cathy De Leon, director of the Department of Library, Arts, and Culture, said in a statement. \u201cLiwanag is more than a festival \u2013 it\u2019s a reflection of the diverse voices that shape Long Beach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the summer, the Bret Harte Neighborhood Library in West Long Beach became the home of the newly established <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presstelegram.com\/2025\/06\/09\/long-beachs-bret-harte-neighborhood-library-now-has-a-collection-of-filipino-american-books\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Filipino American Cultural Heritage Collection<\/a>.
