As a result, Pangaea will shut down at 2743 Franklin Blvd. on March 19, with hopes of finding a future location.

“We were proposed with something to stay there, and it just wasn’t even close to fathomable,” Rob Archie said in a phone interview. “We just couldn’t do it … and so we just had to decide to look for another spot.”

Rob Archie launched Pangaea with his wife Kin in 2008 after falling in love with beer while playing basketball in Europe. At that time, it was a rare spot for imported beer and craft American ales, a distinction it held onto even as Sacramento’s beer scene exploded in the 2010s.

Archie went on to become a partner in Urban Roots Brewing & Smokehouse, Bawk, Good Neighbor and more, but he and Kin maintained sole ownership of Pangaea. The taphouse’s burger also gathered significant acclaim, winning the Sacramento Burger Battle three times during the competition’s heyday in the mid-2010s.

Sign Up for the City of Treats Newsletter

Get the latest Sacramento food news from Benjy Egel in City of Treats — delivered every Tuesday.

“We evolved in front of everybody. We shared so much new stuff with people, you know, new beers and new styles, and introduced brewers and brought people in from other places,” Archie said. “That’s why all the other concepts are what they are, because these are the people we met. These are the relationships we created and the connections we have. And so it’s just amazing, you know, and that’s what I want to continue to do.”

Archie aims to open Pangaea 2.0 as geographically close to the original as possible, he said.

Benjy Egel is the senior food editor at Abridged.
