The promise was part of 2016 negotiations to build a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jre-partners.com\/investments\/the-madelon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">203-unit<\/a> housing project in the neighborhood.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said I\u2019d do it, so I\u2019m doing it,\u201d Podell said on Monday, without explaining further. <\/p>\n<p>Mission Local reported in October that <a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2025\/10\/developer-owes-500k-to-mission-affordable-housing-project-s-f-supervisor-says\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Podell owed $500,000<\/a> to different groups involved in building a community arts space at the 681 Florida St. That work was finished in late 2024, and the funds were due after that. The Florida Street affordable housing project sits next to Podell\u2019s market-rate housing project, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/sanfrancisco\/news\/2025\/08\/14\/the-madelon-san-francisco-rubicon.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">which sold last year for $119.3 million<\/a>, according to the San Francisco Business Times.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, District 9 Supervisor Jackie Fielder asked the city attorney\u2019s office to subpoena developer Podell after he failed to confirm his presence at a city hearing on the allegations. The city attorney\u2019s office <a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2026\/02\/city-readies-to-subpoena-nick-podell\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">readied that subpoena last week<\/a>, Mission Local reported.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Podell said he told the relevant parties on Feb. 5 that he was disbursing the funds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The dispute dates back to September 2016, when Podell\u2019s attorney committed <a href=\"https:\/\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20160913-Nick-Podell-letter-to-Sup.-Campos.PDF.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$500,000<\/a> for the art space at 681 Florida St. That 100-percent affordable housing complex was built on land that Podell donated as part of a deal with neighborhood activists to drop their opposition to his market-rate project at 2000 Bryant St.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/author\/oscarp\/\" rel=\"author nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" data-perfmatters-preload=\"\" alt=\"A man with medium-length curly hair and a beard smiles at the camera, wearing a brown plaid shirt over a navy shirt, in front of a plain light-colored background.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/cropped-MMG_Headshots-1-3-scaled-1.jpg\"  class=\"avatar avatar-80 photo\" height=\"80\" width=\"80\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Reporting from the Mission District and other District 9 neighborhoods.
