{"id":172486,"date":"2026-02-10T22:25:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-10T22:25:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/172486\/"},"modified":"2026-02-10T22:25:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T22:25:07","slug":"wife-headed-to-trial-on-murder-charge-in-slaying-of-cal-fire-captain-at-ramona-home-san-diego-union-tribune","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/172486\/","title":{"rendered":"Wife headed to trial on murder charge in slaying of Cal Fire captain at Ramona home \u2013 San Diego Union-Tribune"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A woman accused of fatally stabbing her wife, a veteran state firefighter, at their Ramona home last year and then fleeing to Mexico, was ordered Tuesday to stand trial for murder.<\/p>\n<p>Yolanda Marodi, 54, is accused of killing her spouse of two years, Cal Fire Capt. Rebecca \u201cBecky\u201d Marodi, at the couple\u2019s Rancho Villa Road home on the night of Feb. 17.<\/p>\n<p>According to testimony from a preliminary hearing held Tuesday in El Cajon Superior Court, the 49-year-old victim sustained 23 stab wounds to her neck, chest and abdomen.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Marodi, who had worked for the state firefighting agency for more than 30 years, died at the scene.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"The San Diego County Sheriffs Office identified Yolanda Marodi, also known as Yolanda Olenjniczak, as a suspect in the homicide of Cal Fire Capt. (San Diego County Sheriff&#8217;s Office)<\/p>\n<p>According to an arrest-warrant declaration filed by a detective with the District Attorney\u2019s Office, Rebecca Marodi had sought to leave the marriage shortly before she was killed.<\/p>\n<p>The day after the slaying, the court document asserts, the suspect sent someone a text message stating, \u201cBecky came home and told me she was leaving me, she met someone else, all the messages were lies. We had a big fight and I hurt her \u2026 I\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The victim\u2019s mother, Lorena Marodi, who lived at the home with her daughter and daughter-in-law, testified that on the day of the killing, Yolanda Marodi spoke to her about her marriage, something Lorena said had \u201cnever\u201d happened before.<\/p>\n<p>During that conversation, Yolanda said \u201cshe and Becky had some things to work out, but there wouldn\u2019t be any fighting\u201d when Rebecca returned home.<\/p>\n<p>Lorena went out with friends that evening. At the end of the night, as she was dropping her friends off, she drove past her home and noticed Yolanda\u2019s car was gone, she testified.<\/p>\n<p>When she returned home, she found a trail of blood leading inside the house, found her daughter\u2019s motionless body and called 911.<\/p>\n<p>Sheriff\u2019s Deputy Angela Peratis, who was one of the first deputies to respond to the home, said she and her partner found the victim face down in a hallway.<\/p>\n<p>The deputies attempted life-saving measures until firefighters arrived and took over, at which point Peratis testified that she overheard one of the firefighters say, \u201cIs that Becky?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The warrant declaration states that footage from a Ring camera captured images of Rebecca Marodi fleeing their home as her wife chased her.<\/p>\n<p>The video footage was not played in court, but sheriff\u2019s homicide Detective Jessica Ricca testified that in her review of the video, the victim can be heard calling out for her mother, to which Yolanda Marodi responds, \u201cShe\u2019s not here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two go out of frame for some time, and when they appear again, Rebecca Marodi appeared to be \u201ccovered in blood,\u201d Ricca testified.<\/p>\n<p>At one point, the bloodied victim was \u201cyelling out, \u2018Yolanda! Please \u2026 I don\u2019t want to die,\u2019\u201d the warrant declaration states. Yolanda Marodi, who appeared to be holding a knife and seemingly had blood on her arms, responded, \u201cYou should have thought about that before,\u201d according to the document.<\/p>\n<p>The mortally wounded victim repeatedly asked her wife to call 911 before the pair re-entered the home, the declaration states.<\/p>\n<p>About 10 minutes later, the camera recorded video of Yolanda Marodi loading items into a Chevrolet Equinox and then driving off, the declaration states.<\/p>\n<p>Yolanda Marodi allegedly crossed the U.S.-Mexico border about an hour after the killing. Mexican authorities arrested her just over a month later near a hotel in the Ferrocarril neighborhood of Mexicali, according to the District Attorney\u2019s Office.
