\n Sacramento doesn\u2019t have a pro
\n football team, but you wouldn\u2019t know it by the thousands of
\n enthusiastic fans who showed up to see NFL legend Tom Brady
\n outside the Golden 1 Center Thursday afternoon. The seven-time
\n Super Bowl champion was there to promote his collecting and
\n trading card shop,
\n CardVault by Tom
\n Brady<\/a>, which is
\n located in Downtown Commons.\n<\/p>\n

\n The mid-afternoon rally drew fans
\n wearing Tom Brady jerseys from his two NFL teams, the New England
\n Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Two men wore plastic goat
\n heads to honor Brady, who\u2019s been dubbed the \u201cgreatest of all
\n time\u201d quarterback. Children sat on their father\u2019s shoulders to
\n get a glimpse of the superstar, who threw autographed footballs
\n to the crowd.\n<\/p>\n

\n \u201cThis is the best turnout we\u2019ve
\n had yet,\u201d Brady told the crowd. \u201cAnd it doesn\u2019t surprise me, back
\n home in the state where I grew up, 90 minutes from San Mateo, to
\n see you guys coming out and showing up. I love you guys so much.
\n When (co-founder) Chris and I talked about where we wanted to
\n start in California, I said it\u2019s got to be Sacramento.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n Nicole Curran of West Sacramento
\n brought her 12-year-old son Cruz, who told Comstock\u2019s that he
\n used $300 in Christmas gift cards to buy cards at the CardVault,
\n including one of his favorite players, Philadelphia Eagles
\n quarterback Jalen Hurts.\n<\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe Vault is such a great
\n opportunity for Sacramento. It gives kids and young adults and
\n even adults like me to be able to come and have the opportunity
\n to appreciate cards; to appreciate the value of cards. It\u2019s a
\n great learning opportunity for kids to learn how to trade cards.
\n It\u2019s not just Pok\u00e9mon. It has everything to do with sports
\n memorabilia,\u201d Curran said.\n<\/p>\n

\n Sacramento is the first
\n California location for CardVault, which has 12 stores so far
\n across the U.S. Co-founder Chris Costa tells Comstock\u2019s that
\n today\u2019s trading cards are very different from the stack of cards
\n that used to come with a stick of gum 50 years ago.\n<\/p>\n

\n \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\n \u201cThey\u2019re getting players to start
\n signing cards that get put into packs, and they\u2019re also taking
\n pieces of players\u2019 jerseys and putting them into cards. They\u2019re
\n creating a rarity that had never existed in the generations
\n prior,\u201d Costa said.\n<\/p>\n

\n The popularity of cards has
\n exploded in recent years, with thousands of new cards bought each
\n day and trading cards for as much as $1 million. The values can
\n increase with age. A 2008 card autographed by Kobe Bryant and
\n Michael Jordan sold for nearly
\n $13 million in
\n 2025<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n

\n Costa says cards are also part of
\n the collecting trend. Some people may collect expensive watches,
\n purses or wine, but as the popularity of athletes rises, the
\n trading card industry has taken off as well.\n<\/p>\n

\n \u201cIt\u2019s also the growth of sports
\n as part of our culture, right?\u201d he said. \u201cSo with the advent of
\n the invention of social media and the position that athletes now
\n have in our society compared to what they had in our society, 10,
\n 15, 30, 50, 100 \u2014 how far back you want to go \u2014 they are more
\n iconic than they\u2019ve ever been.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n While in the past, trading cards
\n have only been about athletes, they now come in a broad range of
\n categories, from Pok\u00e9mon to Disney characters to Marvel
\n superheroes and K-pop stars. This has led to the trading world
\n diversifying and attracting more people of all ages, including
\n women.\n<\/p>\n

\n Costa and mothers like Curran
\n also like that collecting cards teaches children about financial
\n skills. They\u2019ll buy a card and follow along as its value goes up.
\n They\u2019ll invest in others and learn how to buy and trade, similar
\n to trading stocks.\n<\/p>\n

\n \u201cOne of the coolest parts of our
\n space is you can have a kid coming to one of our shops, can spend
\n 20 bucks, and he can leave with the biggest smile he\u2019s had in
\n years. But you can also have somebody come in and pull out a
\n briefcase and put five cards on the table that they\u2019ve been
\n holding for 10 years that are worth a million dollars and
\n everything in between. And I think that\u2019s what makes our industry
\n so unique and so special,\u201d Costa said.\n<\/p>\n

\n As for Brady, Costa says he was
\n able to get his endorsement for the business because Tom has
\n always been an avid collector and sees the potential of where the
\n industry is going. Costa and his co-founders started CardVault in
\n 2020, but it became CardVault by Tom Brady in 2025, when the
\n football star acquired a 50 percent ownership stake in the
\n business.\n<\/p>\n

\n \u201cToday\u2019s turnout was just the
\n craziest turnout we\u2019ve ever had for an event in our company\u2019s
\n history,\u201d Costa said. \u201cIt was shocking. We were all blown away.
\n We\u2019re so grateful to run in Sacramento, and it\u2019s such an amazing
\n community, and we already knew that, but today definitely
\n cemented that in all of our minds.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
