Photo by Sophia Rerucha.<\/p>\n<p>Earl Shaddix, executive director of Economic Development on Third, a nonprofit that works to support businesses along the 3rd Street corridor, said the interest from Autozone came as a surprise, and, despite not being a pharmacy, it will help the corridor economically.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur 3rd Street businesses need foot traffic, plain and simple,\u201d Shaddix wrote in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edotbayview.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">newsletter<\/a>. \u201cThe likelihood of this space ever becoming a grocery or pharmacy is pretty slim.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Residents interested in giving their input can go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/edotbayview.org\/so\/d7PmM-VVo\/c?w=uP1avYxjRl7aLdeSaIbtC14YMleyVOQy4UnXpnzOt3E.eyJ1IjoiaHR0cHM6Ly8zMjI0ZGNmMC1mNjY1LTRhY2ItOGEzZS02MDMxNGExOTQ4Y2IudXNyZmlsZXMuY29tL3VnZC8zMjI0ZGNfNDM4MDliMjA0YTIwNGE4ODk0OWQwMjA4YWUzYTkzNTkucGRmIiwiciI6IjI5ZWE4MDM0LTIyNzMtNDFhMi05ZTc4LTI4OTE5MmRjNTc3NyIsIm0iOiJtYWlsIiwiYyI6IjYzZjI5NzcxLTljYTQtNDA1MS1iYjNjLTVlOWU1MzMxNmQ1MSJ9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pre-application meeting<\/a> \u00a0on Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. via Zoom.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nine new trees on the Third St Corridor<\/p>\n<p>Nine new trees were planted Feb. 7; four on Newhall Avenue and Hudson Street by the bus stop, three on 3rd Street, and one in front of La Laguna Taqueria, and one at the Community Youth Center on 3rd Street.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bayview has <a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2025\/05\/sf-bayview-hunters-point-street-trees\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one of the smallest tree canopies in the city,<\/a> so every tree helps.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey came out really nice,\u201d said a bus driver for the 15 who was getting ready for his route.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bayview_trees2_rerucha.jpg\" alt=\"Two city buses are stopped on either side of a small, newly planted palm tree on a sidewalk. Photo by Sophia Rerucha. <\/p>\n<p>The trees were all planted about a block away from the Southeast Wastewater Treatment Plant \u2014\u00a0Bayview also handles about <a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2026\/02\/sf-bayview-foul-odo-fading\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">80 percent of the city\u2019s wastewater<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The trees were subsidized by Arcadis Inc., which renewed its $26.5 million contract with the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission in July to do construction management on the city\u2019s biosolids digesters in Bayview.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Arcadis employees and <a href=\"https:\/\/climateactionnowcalifornia.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Climate Action Now!<\/a> volunteers did the planting.<\/p>\n<p>Black history month ends with a very long bike ride<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/black-history-month-parade-block-party-bayview-sf-rsvp4free-tickets-1981026328075\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Black History Month Parade &amp; Block Party<\/a> will be held at the Southeast Community Center on Valentines day. A few days later, on Feb. 17th the <a href=\"https:\/\/events.humanitix.com\/bayview-mardi-gras-celebration-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bayview Mardi Gras Parade<\/a> will set out at 11 a.m. from Gumbo Social.<\/p>\n<p>Activities close out on Feb. 28 with a family-friendly bike ride starting at 9 a.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Fountain in Yerba Buena Gardens. The ride will follow the city\u2019s eastern waterfront down to the Bayview, where a block party awaits at Smoke Soul Kitchen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Stops along the route include the Museum of the African Diaspora and statues of baseball greats Willie Mays and Toni Stone.<\/p>\n<p>Bring friends and expect company, including Shariff Wynn, Bayview resident and community engagement coordinator for the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. The latter is co-hosting the ride with Livable Cities and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sf.gov\/black-history-month\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mayor\u2019s Office of Economic and Workforce Development<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Around 110 people have RSVPd, and Wynn is anticipating more. You don\u2019t have to RSVP, she says, but <a href=\"https:\/\/sfbike.org\/event\/bayview-black-history-month-bike-ride\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">please RSVP<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Demolition comes for Pier 92, (but not the grain towers)<\/p>\n<p>Demolition of the abandoned buildings at Pier 92 at Islais Creek have begun. The steel elevators were demolished this week and cranes loom at the site ready for more work.<\/p>\n<p>The Port will demolish nine ancillary buildings, as well as steel loading towers and timber wharf, to \u201cimprove safety and security of the site since these buildings are the main access points for trespassers,\u201d according to a San Francisco Port staff memo from June 2025.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"853\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bayview_creek_rerucha-1-853x640.jpg\" alt=\"A waterfront industrial area with a red cargo ship docked, a crane, and large silos featuring colorful murals under a partly cloudy sky.\" class=\"wp-image-834025\"  \/>Grain silos still standing at Islais Creek, but steel elevators were demolished. Photo by Sophia Rerucha. <\/p>\n<p>Also on site is an enormous mural painted on the side of two grain silos decommissioned in 1989 after the Loma Prieta earthquake. The Port filed for a demolition permit for the silos in 2024, but has no current plans to demolish the silos, according to a spokesperson for the Port.
