FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — As the Fresno Unified School District navigates a budget deficit, classified employees are voicing their concerns about possible layoffs to their essential workforce.<\/p>\n
At Wednesday’s board meeting, Fresno Unified custodians, bus drivers and food service workers called on district leaders to reconsider proposed job layoffs and wage freezes.<\/p>\n
They say these budget decisions will hurt departments that are already stretched thin, ultimately hurting the students.<\/p>\n
“I take pride in the work I do because I know that it’s important for the health and wellbeing for our students and directly impacts the outcomes,” Fresno High School custodian Luiz Munoz said.<\/p>\n
At least 30 teacher positions are also at risk.<\/p>\n
This comes as the union negotiates its next three-year contract with the district.<\/p>\n
Their last contract expired in June.<\/p>\n
Layoff notices are due by March 15, but budget hearings are set to go on for the next couple of months.<\/p>\n
