SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — San Francisco teachers rallied on the streets of the city Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n

“We’ve been waiting to be listened to and they only started listening two days ago,” said teacher Kelly Taggart.<\/p>\n

The rally coming as their union, the United Educators of San Francisco, announced the strike would continue on Thursday after another round of failed negotiations with the district.<\/p>\n

Teachers like Amanda Collins telling us key sticking points that remain include funding for special education, higher wages and health care.<\/p>\n

“As a mom who is responsible for the health care of both my husband and my two kids, I pay $18,000 a year out of pocket for health care,” said Collins.<\/p>\n

A teachers’ strike over pay and health care has kept San Francisco Unified School District schools closed for a third day Wednesday.<\/p>\n

With the two sides still far apart, many are wondering how long the strike could last.<\/p>\n

“At the moment, there’s no easy mechanism to end the strike,” said John Logan.<\/p>\n

Logan is a labor specialist and professor at San Francisco State University.<\/p>\n

He says as talks continue, there’s little room for intervention from outside parties like the city or even the state to try and bring it to an end.<\/p>\n

While the last SFUSD strike decades ago lasted for about seven weeks, Logan tells me he’d be surprised if this year’s lasted that long.<\/p>\n

“When it drags on and on it’s very difficult to maintain that level of support. The teachers themselves do not want to be out on a long strike. And I think most of them are probably thinking maybe this will last a week,” said Logan.<\/p>\n

Many parents of students in the San Francisco Unified School District are feeling the strain of the ongoing teachers’ strike.<\/p>\n

The school district says it’s willing to work with the union to make a fair deal as soon as possible.<\/p>\n

But, given its budgetary issues, it has resisted calls from educators to tap into reserve funds to make it happen.<\/p>\n

“Our offer is generous, and we have figured out a way to make sure that we can pay for it fiscally responsible,” said SFUSD Superintendent Maria Su.<\/p>\n

Stances many rallying say are unacceptable.<\/p>\n

And ones they plan on protesting against until their demands are met.<\/p>\n

“I mean look at us, this is the rainy day fund. This is the rainy day fund. What is it for if it’s not for the people who are in the classroom everyday with our students?” said Taggart.<\/p>\n
