{"id":175220,"date":"2026-02-12T17:01:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T17:01:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/175220\/"},"modified":"2026-02-12T17:01:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-12T17:01:08","slug":"doan-nabs-dual-endorsements-in-san-jose-district-7-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/175220\/","title":{"rendered":"Doan nabs dual endorsements in San Jose District 7 race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s a rare alignment of San Jose\u2019s political stars: Two influential organizations on opposite sides of San Jose\u2019s labor-business political divide have endorsed the same candidate in the District 7 City Council race.<\/p>\n<p>Incumbent Councilmember Bien Doan has won support from both the Silicon Valley Biz PAC and South Bay Labor Council. Doan \u2014 a longtime union member and former fire captain who has been a consistent vote for business friendly policies \u2014 is <a href=\"https:\/\/sanjosespotlight.com\/2026-marks-another-busy-election-year-for-san-jose\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">battling to hold onto his seat<\/a> for a second term. The labor council has also endorsed two of his rivals in the race, City Hall staffer Hanh-Giao Nguyen and union member Rafael Garcia.<\/p>\n<p>Doan\u2019s campaign has trumpeted the twin endorsements as he makes the case to voters that he will lead as a solution-oriented consensus builder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese endorsements mean a great deal to me because they reflect how I lead and how I treat people,\u201d Doan told San Jos\u00e9 Spotlight. \u201cWhen everyone comes together, we win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>San Jose\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sanjosespotlight.com\/silicon-valley-labor-leaders-make-2024-election-endorsements\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">business and labor coalitions<\/a> \u2014 rough groupings of ideologically aligned candidates and organizations \u2014 have clashed in recent years over some of the city\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sanjosespotlight.com\/will-san-jose-city-council-lose-its-labor-majority-election-2024\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">most pressing policy decisions<\/a>, including how to shelter homeless people, how to fund affordable housing and when to raise taxes.<\/p>\n<p>While candidates for city council occasionally enjoy some backing from <a href=\"https:\/\/sanjosespotlight.com\/san-jose-district-2-candidate-bridges-labor-business-divide\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">both labor and business<\/a>, an outright dual endorsement is <a href=\"https:\/\/sanjosespotlight.com\/silicon-valley-labor-leaders-make-2024-election-endorsements\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exceedingly rare<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I had to throw a percentage out there, it would be maybe 1% of the time,\u201d Victor Gomez, who heads the Silicon Valley Biz PAC, told San Jos\u00e9 Spotlight.<\/p>\n<p>Even for Gomez \u2014 whose group also endorsed Doan during his <a href=\"https:\/\/sanjosespotlight.com\/east-san-jose-district-7-d7-councilmember-maya-esparza-ousted-by-newcomer-bien-doan-election-2022\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">successful 2022 run<\/a> to unseat <a href=\"https:\/\/sanjosespotlight.com\/election-2022-the-race-for-san-jose-city-council-district-7\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">then incumbent Maya Esparza<\/a> \u2014 news of the labor council\u2019s endorsement raised some question marks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, when you see this endorsement from labor, you think, \u2018What enticed them to make that decision?&#8217;\u201d Gomez said.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, Gomez said his group remains impressed with Doan\u2019s track record, including his longstanding skepticism of tax hikes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Doan) understands it from our perspective,\u201d Gomez said. \u201cWe\u2019re happy to see him advocate for the taxpayers of the city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The labor council announced its three-way endorsement of District 7 candidates in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/southbaylaborcouncil\/posts\/pfbid02Bs6JzoEyFnw6cfVgLYNMX7U6YZepK2iVF5hquAH2kBoiEaCpnNPH4S25CuMUiKpJl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook post<\/a> Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll three District 7 candidates demonstrate strong commitments to workers\u2019 rights, fair wages, and community-driven labor policies,\u201d the group wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The labor council <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southbaylabor.org\/sblc_june_2022_primary_endorsements\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">didn\u2019t endorse Doan in 2022<\/a>. But for this year\u2019s endorsement, Executive Officer Jean Cohen cited Doan\u2019s support for \u201cworker-focused measures,\u201d such as Med 30, a <a href=\"https:\/\/sanjosespotlight.com\/san-jose-cuts-drug-oversight-program-days-after-it-restarts\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drug oversight program<\/a> in the city\u2019s fire department, wage theft protections and his work supporting \u201cgood faith\u201d contract negotiations with city workers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur endorsement reflects Councilmember Doan\u2019s record in office,\u201d Cohen told San Jos\u00e9 Spotlight.<\/p>\n<p>Doan highlighted his own union credentials, noting he was a member of San Jose Firefighters Local 230 over his 27-year career as a firefighter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of my life, I\u2019ve been a union member,\u201d he said. \u201cBecause of that experience, I understand why worker protections matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cta-na2.hubspot.com\/web-interactives\/public\/v1\/track\/redirect?encryptedPayload=AVxigLKaZHtfyHgeE3jDkYDbM10cLoyrDSokOyi%2FB6AFtdudACXfiM4RSBu0QLJZFJ%2F3S4FhbsKb%2BkV2obmvBMfAvaYh5favjKBhnHtlqcgIm4Hed6nWP%2FU%2BH5E1rnEZOyYp1m5pnaxw7uQXSNSHSobYT2OZpqE9%2BVeipYiqa7Aq1pHjj0pdTP0Fez5AyEx3BUi%2BdIno8dj%2FXQ%3D%3D&amp;webInteractiveContentId=184632509590&amp;portalId=44356355\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"height: 100%; width: 100%; object-fit: fill;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1769027829_854_interactive-184632509590.png\" alt=\"Keep our journalism free for everyone!\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition to Nguyen and Garcia, Doan is also facing a challenge from East Side Union High School District Trustee Van Le.<\/p>\n<p>According to the most recently released campaign finance records, Le is <a href=\"https:\/\/sanjosespotlight.com\/follow-the-money-in-san-joses-city-council-races\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">leading in donations<\/a> so far with a $65,217 fundraising haul, including $19,800 in loans she made to herself. She said she has received endorsements from several local education leaders, including fellow East Side Union High School District Trustee J. Manuel Herrera.<\/p>\n<p>Doan has raised $23,746.
