{"id":175314,"date":"2026-02-12T18:25:17","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T18:25:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/175314\/"},"modified":"2026-02-12T18:25:17","modified_gmt":"2026-02-12T18:25:17","slug":"golden-hour-cocktail-bar-opens-near-fresno-craft-distillery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/175314\/","title":{"rendered":"Golden Hour cocktail bar opens near Fresno craft distillery"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"border-width:1px; border-style:solid; border-color:#000000; padding: 1em;\">Inside Look is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fresnobee.com\/topics\/inside-look\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fresno Bee series<\/a> where we take readers behind the scenes at restaurants, new businesses, local landmarks and news stories.<\/p>\n<p>In far-flung northeast Fresno, behind Mad Duck Craft Brewing Co., there\u2019s a little upscale cocktail bar that\u2019s putting on the finishing touches before opening.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coppermaple-distilling.com\/thegoldenhour\">The Golden Hour Cocktail Lounge<\/a> is a tiny place that seats 26 people at Copper and Maple avenues.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s something new for Fresno, with a vibe that takes you out of the freshly constructed edges of rural Fresno and transplants you to San Francisco or some other edgy urban hub.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s got something else different for Fresno, as well: a distillery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI actually think we\u2019re the only craft distillery in town,\u201d said Alex Costa, distilling consultant at Golden Hour.<\/p>\n<p>Next door sits <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coppermaple-distilling.com\/\">Maple &amp; Copper Distilling Co.<\/a> where vodka, gin and soon white rum and many more spirits will be made. Those spirits go into the cocktails that will be served at Golden Hour next door when it opens.<\/p>\n<p>The lounge is expected to open around Feb. 14 \u2014 maybe a few days before or after. They built and designed The Golden Hour with architect Robby Antoyan, infusing a 1920s, old Hollywood vibe into it.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the partners from <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.madduckcraft.com\/\">Mad Duck<\/a> \u2014 Costa and Dustin Llanes, who is Golden Hour\u2019s general manager with 22 years of bartending experience \u2014  are running the day-to-day business at Golden Hour and Maple &amp; Copper. Costa is childhood friends with the owners, but the businesses are separate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCopper &amp; Maple and Golden Hour have nothing to do with the Duck, other than being next door to each other,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re just here because we got lucky and happen to know them and know how to ferment things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The vodka is fermented from corn. The gin is made from the vodka, plus botanicals such as juniper, pink grapefruit, cardamom, coriander and makrut lime.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also a whiskey using Maple &amp; Copper\u2019s recipe, though it\u2019s made in Kentucky.<\/p>\n<p>This is a small-batch operation. A 2,000-liter still makes about 160 bottles per run.<\/p>\n<p>They plan to sell bottles of the alcohol eventually. ERIC PAUL ZAMORA                                                                            ezamora@fresnobee.com                                                                                        <\/p>\n<p>This bar isn\u2019t designed to impress other bartenders, said Llanes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really about the customer and how they feel and what they want,\u201d he said. \u201cWe want to make a place normal people want to hang out at.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But still, the drinks are a step above what you would find at your average bar. All the juices are made fresh on site. They marinate and stuff their own olives and infuse their spirits with flavors in house.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a mix of classic and historic cocktails and innovative ones on the menu.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll find an $18 Bananas Foster Old Fashioned, for example. It\u2019s made with bourbon infused with brown butter, walnut liquor, chocolate bitters, and candied walnuts and a caramelized banana slice.<\/p>\n<p>Even the traditional cocktails have a little something extra going on.<\/p>\n<p>Take the \u201cfilthy martini\u201d on the menu. It\u2019s made with Copper &amp; Maple vodka washed in extra-virgin olive oil, two kinds of vermouth, and olives stuffed with blue cheese in house.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s got an extra briny taste, but also enough flavor that it tastes like more than just vodka. If you\u2019re the type who can\u2019t drink a regular martini straight, you probably can drink this one.<\/p>\n<p>Another cocktail that is likely to be a favorite? The saffron sour, made with Copper &amp; Maple vodka, saffron syrup, mango liquor, lemon and egg white (with a vegan option available). It\u2019s served with a tiny flower on top.<\/p>\n<p>Zero-proof drinks are available too.<\/p>\n<p>At just 760 square feet, The Golden Hour is small. Reservations will be available on its website once it\u2019s open. It will take walk ins. But they will only allow as many people in as they have seats, meaning no packed crowds hovering over seated people.<\/p>\n<p>Details: The Golden Hour is at 1974 E. Copper Ave., suite 101.
