(Image from American Jewish Committee video)<\/p>\n<p>What took place before San Diego\u2019s recent Jan. 19 \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alliancesd.org\/all_peoples_celebration\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">All Peoples Celebration<\/a>\u201d to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is a startling example of what can happen when a single word that reflects a simple objective can become hijacked.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timesofsandiego.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Opinion-Logo.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"144\" height=\"63\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1770923169_84_Opinion-Logo.jpg\" alt=\"Opinion logo\" class=\"wp-image-24635\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>San Diego Jewish World <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdjewishworld.com\/2026\/01\/18\/jews-in-the-news-sunday-jan-18-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrote on Jan. 18<\/a> that \u201cAmerican-Israeli Rabbi Hanan Leberman of San Diego\u2019s Tifereth Israel Synagogue was disinvited from delivering a closing message at the All People\u2019s Breakfast in Balboa Park \u2026 causing shock, outrage and protest from San Diego\u2019s Jewish community.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Leberman said the invitation was rescinded due to \u201chis connection to Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his letter to the organizers of the event, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alliancesd.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alliance San Diego<\/a>, he wrote that the message he preaches \u201cis deeply aligned with the Reverend Dr. King\u2019s teachings\u201d and excluding him from speaking \u201cruns counter to Dr. King\u2019s message.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leberman said the decision to disinvite him is \u201ca disservice to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I believe the organization would benefit from deeper education about what Zionism truly is and about what the Jewish community is facing today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>King was by all accounts a staunch defender of Zionism and Israel\u2019s right to exist and was said to be particularly concerned over the mischaracterization of Zionism as racism.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If Zionists are to be excluded from an event labeled \u201call peoples,\u201d would King himself be unable to attend?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.finestcommunitysd.org\/post\/finest-community-coalition-letter-to-alliance-san-diego-leadership-and-all-peoples-celebration-spons\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A letter<\/a> to Alliance San Diego and sponsors of the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration signed by 47 members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finestcommunitysd.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Finest Community Coalition<\/a> states that the decision to disinvite Leberman because of \u201chis belief in the right of the Jewish people to live safely in their historic homeland of Israel \u2026 contradicts the values associated with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. whose legacy this event seeks to honor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The document from the coalition (whose mission is: \u201ccombating antisemitism together for a better San Diego\u201d) cites King\u2019s public support of the Jewish people and of Israel\u2019s right to exist in peace and security.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>King believed that justice requires the courage \u201cto do what\u2019s right even when it\u2019s uncomfortable,\u201d the letter states, adding that backing away from inclusion \u201creflects a lack of courage.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s motto for the celebration was, ironically, \u201cChoose Courage.\u201d Courage is the last thing the organizers chose.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdjewishworld.com\/2026\/01\/21\/jews-in-the-news-wednesday-jan-21-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">As reported<\/a> in San Diego Jewish World, Tifereth Israel Synagogue\u2019s president Lisa Berman Hernandez said Leberman was disinvited because another scheduled participant, \u201cwho is openly anti-Zionist, was unwilling to share space with Rabbi Leberman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Hernandez, the organizers \u201csuggested they were concerned about \u2018potential disruption\u2019 due to his [Leberman\u2019s] views.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By refusing to share space with a rabbi whose only \u201csin\u201d was that he believes Israel has a right to self-determination, the individual whose intolerance betrayed the legacy of King is the one who should have been disinvited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe deeply that progress is made not by silencing voices, but by engaging them,\u201d said Hernandez. \u201cWe stand with our rabbi, we stand for inclusion, and we stand for dialogue rooted in mutual respect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zionism is defined as a movement that supports the right of the Jewish people to a homeland in their historic ancestral territory. It\u2019s a belief in the right of Israel to exist, a value intrinsic to Jewish identity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What it does not mean is unilateral support for actions, policies and stated objectives executed by former or current Israeli leadership.<\/p>\n<p>The basic definition of Zionism has become lost and twisted over the years to now suggest support of oppression, genocide and immoral conduct against civilian populations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Anti-Israel forces have turned the word Zionism into a loathsome label.<\/p>\n<p>This warped definition of what it means to be a Zionist has insidiously infected the general psyche and made anti-Jewish ideology acceptable, as the lines between antisemitism and anti-Zionism have blurred.<\/p>\n<p>For many, \u201cDenying the Jewish people their basic human rights, including the right to self-determination, is antisemitism,\u201d to quote a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/auto-insert-182749\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a> submitted to the United Nations Secretary General in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>The basic meaning of Zionism must be reclaimed for what it stands for \u2014 not for support of past or current administrations but in support of the continued existence of Israel as a sovereign nation.
