The way Sheila E. remembers it, she received her first call about a gig as a working Los Angeles musician as she was busy unpacking the moving truck with which she\u2019d just moved to L.A.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Can you come do a session?\u2019 \u2014 that type of thing,\u201d the Oakland native recalls with a laugh. \u201cIt was pretty awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Sunday <\/a> <\/p>\n

This was 1980 or \u201981, she reckons, just after she\u2019d come off the road playing percussion for the jazz star George Duke; by 1984, she\u2019d become a star herself with the pop hit \u201cThe Glamorous Life,\u201d which she cut with her mentor Prince and which went to No. 7 on Billboard\u2019s Hot 100.<\/p>\n

Over the decades that followed, Sheila E. went on to record or perform with everyone from Ringo Starr to Beyonc\u00e9. Yet her latest projects look back to her earliest days playing Latin jazz with her father, fellow percussionist Pete Escovedo: \u201cBailar\u201d is a salsa album with guest vocal spots by the likes of Rub\u00e9n Blades and Gloria Estefan, while an accompanying instrumental disc features appearances by players such as bassist Marcus Miller and trumpeter Chris Botti.<\/p>\n

Sheila E. will tour Europe in April. Here, she runs down her routine for a welcome day off at home in L.A.<\/p>\n

10 a.m.: Parents in the pews<\/p>\n

I would get up around 7:30 or 8, and the first thing I\u2019ll do is go to church. My church is called Believe L.A.<\/a>, and it\u2019s in Calabasas. My pastor is Aaron Lindsey, who\u2019s an incredible gospel producer who\u2019s won many Grammys. The band is always on point, and it feeds my soul \u2014 it\u2019s what I need as part of my food. You just walk out so happy. I mean, I walk in happy most of the time. But you walk out filled with love and peace. It\u2019s a joyful time, especially when I get to bring my parents with me. Still having them around is a huge blessing. They just celebrated their 69th anniversary. That\u2019s really rare.<\/p>\n

Noon: No juice required<\/p>\n

After church we\u2019ll go to brunch at Leo & Lily <\/a>in Woodland Hills. Sometimes I\u2019ll order the breakfast, which is two eggs and turkey bacon and potatoes. But sometimes that\u2019s a little bit too heavy, so I\u2019ll get the orzo salad, which is really good. I might have an espresso, or I might have a glass of Champagne. I don\u2019t like mimosas \u2014 just give it to me straight.<\/p>\n

1:30 p.m.: Retail therapy<\/p>\n

My parents love driving down Ventura Boulevard. We\u2019ll stop at some places and go window shopping, or maybe we\u2019ll go to the Topanga Westfield<\/a> mall. And when we finish at the mall, I have to go to Costco. The Costco run is really just for my dog \u2014 I have to get all her food. I get turkey and vegetables, and I cook all that and pre-make her meals for two weeks so I don\u2019t have to deal with it. I can just open it, warm it up and feed her. She\u2019s a mixed pit rescue, and her name is Emma. I got her when she was 5 months old in Oakland while we were performing, and now she\u2019s 12. She\u2019s a sweetheart.<\/p>\n

4 p.m.: Family secret<\/p>\n

We\u2019re sports fans, so if it\u2019s football season, we have to hurry up and get back to my house for the game. We\u2019re a 49ers family. I would say the Raiders because we\u2019re from Oakland, but we\u2019ve always been 49ers fans. I mean, when it\u2019s time to root for the Raiders, we do. We don\u2019t hate like the Raiders hate on us. I\u2019ll cook food depending on who all\u2019s coming over \u2014 my nephews and various friends and so on. I grill a lot, so I\u2019ll do steaks or lamb chops or chicken wings. My mom loves making potato salad. I can\u2019t tell you the recipe \u2014 it\u2019s a secret. It\u2019s actually her mother\u2019s potato salad, and they\u2019re Creoles. Those Creoles don\u2019t mess around with their potato salad.<\/p>\n

8:30 p.m.: Games after the game<\/p>\n

I never tell anyone to leave. Sometimes people spend the night \u2014 it\u2019s an open house. If we\u2019re not too tired, we\u2019ll start playing board games or card games. Don\u2019t get us started on poker.<\/p>\n

11:30 p.m.: Steam time<\/p>\n

Before bed I\u2019ll get into the sauna just to relax and do a little sweating. Then I go take a shower with jazz or spa music playing. Sometimes I\u2019ll do a little stretching before I get in the bed. I usually don\u2019t read before I go to sleep.
