{"id":176840,"date":"2026-02-13T18:28:31","date_gmt":"2026-02-13T18:28:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/176840\/"},"modified":"2026-02-13T18:28:31","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T18:28:31","slug":"san-francisco-teachers-strike-ends-as-union-and-school-district-reach-tentative-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/176840\/","title":{"rendered":"San Francisco teachers&#8217; strike ends as union and school district reach tentative deal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A San Francisco teachers\u2019 strike that closed public schools for some 50,000 students this week ended Friday as the union reached a tentative agreement with the cash-strapped school district, which will provide pay raises and improved healthcare benefits.<\/p>\n<p>The tentative contract between the San Francisco Unified School District and United Educators of San Francisco includes a 5% raise over two years for teachers and fully funded healthcare for union members and their families starting in 2027, according to the union. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe won!\u201d the union said in <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/uesf.org\/news\/bargaining-updates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a statement<\/a> just after 5:30 a.m. Friday. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know our work is not done,\u201d the statement read. \u201cWhile we didn\u2019t win everything we know we deserve, this strike allowed us to imagine our schools and classrooms as they should be with staffing levels high enough that our students can learn and thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schools have been closed since the strike began Monday, leaving families to scramble for child care and meals as teachers rallied for their first strike since 1979. <\/p>\n<p>Campuses will not reopen until Wednesday. The district called Friday a \u201ctransition day\u201d for staffers, who were expected to return to their work sites. The district said schools would remain closed Monday for Presidents Day and Tuesday for Lunar New Year. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI recognize that this past week has been challenging,\u201d San Francisco schools Supt. Maria Su said in a statement Friday. <\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cI am so proud of the resilience and strength of our community. This is a new beginning, and I want to celebrate our diverse community of educators, administrators, parents, and students as we come together and heal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Teachers took to picket lines despite last-minute pleas from San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie and prominent lawmakers, including U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco), to keep classrooms open while contract negotiations \u2014 which began in March 2025 \u2014 continued.<\/p>\n<p>The union said it had been clear about its timeline. <\/p>\n<p>The San Francisco teachers\u2019 strike could portend more labor unrest in California, where educators in other major districts, including Los Angeles, have signaled that they, too, are prepared to strike for higher pay, smaller class sizes and more resources.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the California Teachers Assn., the statewide teachers\u2019 union, launched the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cta.org\/press-release\/unprecedented-we-cant-wait-campaign-is-launched\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cWe Can\u2019t Wait\u201d campaign<\/a>, urging union chapters to band together to be forceful in labor negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>Members of United Teachers Los Angeles <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-01-31\/lausd-teachers-union-members-authorize-strike-ratcheting-up-pressure-on-contract-talks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">voted overwhelmingly<\/a> last month to authorize their leadership to call a strike, increasing pressure as negotiations stall and as the Los Angeles Unified School District is planning for likely staff layoffs and budget cuts.<\/p>\n<p>In San Diego, the teachers\u2019 union voted before winter break to authorize <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sdea.net\/ulp-strike-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a one-day unfair labor practice strike<\/a> on Feb. 26 if the San Diego Unified School District does not improve special education staffing.<\/p>\n<p>Unions representing educators for at least two Sacramento-area school districts \u2014 the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/local\/education\/article314652747.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Natomas Unified School District<\/a> and <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/local\/education\/article314551557.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Twin Rivers Unified School District<\/a> \u2014 also voted this month to authorize strikes. <\/p>\n<p>The labor tensions come as COVID relief funds have ended and public school enrollment in California has plummeted in recent years, leading to reduced state funding.<\/p>\n<p>The San Francisco deal comes as the district is facing <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfusd.edu\/about-sfusd\/budget-and-lcap\/budget-faqs-and-definitions\/budget-faqs-budget-development\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a $102-million budget deficit<\/a> and is under state fiscal oversight because of a long-standing financial crisis.
