Somewhere in the viral footage of the Super Bowl LX halftime show, if you know where to look, is Miguel Soria. He\u2019s wearing a 40-pound sugarcane bush costume and is Grass Bunny No. A21. He can\u2019t see much through the fronds, but he\u2019s having the time of his life.<\/p>\n

Soria discovered the casting call on TikTok. The listing, posted by production company Backlit, sought field cast members \u2014 not dancers, but disciplined performers capable of executing structured blocking and movement while wearing 40 pounds of gear. Participants needed to be generally in shape and between 5 feet, 10 inches,i and 6 feet tall. A \u201cmarching arts\u201d background was a plus. Soria was one of 380 selected.<\/p>\n

Seven rehearsals near Levi\u2019s Stadium stretched across two weeks leading up to game day. These were largely uneventful \u2014 a lot of standing and waiting. The term \u201cgrass bunny\u201d started as an informal label among the cast and stuck. On the day of the game, the cast reported to the stadium at 8:30 a.m.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s almost a full workday before you even get on the field [at 5 p.m.],\u201d Soria said. The bus ride to the stadium took more than an hour in traffic, and the group\u2019s energy had dipped.<\/p>\n

The spectacle of an entire sugarcane field moving in formation evoked Birnam Wood coming to Dunsinane in Shakespeare\u2019s \u201cMacbeth.\u201d But instead of spelling doom for a Scottish king, it spelled out choreography for more than 100 million viewers.<\/p>\n

Soria was positioned on the outside of the formation, which gave him a partial view of the performance and \u2014 most importantly \u2014 a glimpse of Ricky Martin. The full scope of the performance was not visible to him from inside the costume.<\/p>\n

For Soria, the absurdity was part of the appeal.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou sign up to be a blade of grass at the Super Bowl, and then you actually become a blade of grass at the Super Bowl,\u201d he said. \u201cWe had no idea it would become this viral thing. Hearing the crowd react \u2014 that\u2019s when I felt the weight of it.\u201d<\/p>\n
